Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- كَشَفْنَا (We removed/uncovered): Lifting away and dispelling something harmful.
- الْعَذَابَ (the punishment): The severe affliction sent upon them as a divine trial.
- يَنكُثُونَ (they break): Violating and reneging on a promise or covenant.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the story of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) with Pharaoh and his people. When the severe punishments—such as the flood, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood—struck the Egyptians, they cried out to Moses, begging him to pray to his Lord to lift these calamities, promising that if the punishment were removed, they would believe and let the Children of Israel go.
Yet, the moment Allah, out of His mercy and in response to Moses' supplication, removed the punishment from them, they immediately broke their promise. They did not honor their word; instead, they persisted stubbornly in their disbelief and transgression. This was not a momentary lapse but a pattern of deceit—each time relief came, they reverted to their arrogance and denial, as if the suffering had never touched them.
This verse exposes the fickle nature of those who only turn to Allah in times of hardship but forget Him in times of ease. It also highlights the profound patience and perseverance of Moses, who continued to intercede for a people who repeatedly betrayed their covenant.
A Call to Reflection:
How often do we find ourselves in similar situations? When trials strike, we raise our hands in sincere supplication, promising Allah that we will change our ways. But once the difficulty passes, we slip back into old habits, forgetting the lessons we learned in our moments of vulnerability. This verse is a powerful reminder to remain steadfast in faith and gratitude—not just when we need Allah, but in every moment of our lives. True faith is not a fair-weather companion; it is a constant, unwavering commitment to Allah's guidance. Let us learn from the example of Pharaoh's people and strive to be among those who honor their promises to their Lord, for Allah is ever watchful and His mercy is boundless for those who are sincere.
