Word Meanings:

  • Mahin (مَهِين): Weak, contemptible, and devoid of honor or power.
  • La yakadu yubin (لَا يَكَادُ يُبِين): He can scarcely make his speech clear or articulate his words properly.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Pharaoh continues his arrogant tirade against Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), addressing his people with disdain and mockery. He says: "Am I not better than this one who is contemptible and can scarcely express himself clearly?"

Pharaoh's words reveal his deep-seated pride and arrogance. He compares himself to Musa, peace be upon him, claiming superiority based on worldly status, power, and eloquence. He refers to Musa as "mahin" — meaning weak, lowly, and without any honor or might in Pharaoh's eyes. This was Pharaoh's attempt to belittle Musa by pointing to his humble circumstances as a fugitive from Egypt who had fled after accidentally killing a man, and who now returned as a messenger of Allah.

Pharaoh also mocks Musa's speech impediment — the difficulty in articulation that Musa had mentioned in his prayer to Allah (as recorded in Surah Taha: "And loosen the knot from my tongue, that they may understand my speech"). Pharaoh used this as a weapon of ridicule, failing to recognize that Allah had already answered Musa's prayer and eased his speech. What Pharaoh saw as a weakness was actually a sign of Musa's profound humility and reliance upon his Lord.

The particle "am" here carries the meaning of "bal" (rather), indicating that Pharaoh was not genuinely asking a question but rather making a defiant declaration. His statement was driven by kufr (disbelief), stubbornness, and his desperate attempt to turn people away from the path of Allah. He presented himself as the paragon of greatness — wealthy, powerful, and articulate — while dismissing the Messenger of Allah as insignificant.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse serves as a timeless reminder of how worldly standards of greatness are utterly meaningless in the sight of Allah. Pharaoh measured people by their wealth, status, and eloquence, yet Allah measures people by their faith, sincerity, and obedience. How many powerful tyrants have been humiliated, and how many humble believers have been elevated to the highest ranks of honor?

Dear reader, do not be deceived by outward appearances. The true measure of a person's worth lies in their heart and their relationship with their Creator. Musa, peace be upon him, was a man of simple means, with a speech impediment, yet Allah chose him to confront the mightiest tyrant of his time. Allah granted him miracles that defied all natural laws, and ultimately, Pharaoh — with all his power and eloquence — was drowned in the sea while Musa and his followers were saved.

Let this verse inspire you to never look down upon others for their apparent weaknesses, and never be dazzled by the temporary glitter of this world. True honor belongs to Allah and to those who believe in Him and follow His guidance. The Qur'an repeatedly teaches us that the most honored among people are the most righteous (Surah Al-Hujurat: 13). So strive to be among those whom Allah honors, not among those who are deceived by their own arrogance.

📜 Verse 50-54 — Az-Zukhruf

But when We removed from them the affliction, at once they broke their word.
And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see?
Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear?
Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?"
So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah].
