Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yaghsha (يَغْشَى): To cover, envelop, or overwhelm completely, leaving no escape.
- Al-Nas (النَّاسَ): The people — specifically referring to the disbelievers of Quraysh at the time of revelation, and by extension, all who reject the truth.
- Alim (أَلِيمٌ): Painful, agonizing, causing severe hurt and distress.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the description of a terrifying sign from Allah — a dense, visible smoke that will envelop the people entirely, covering them from all sides like a suffocating blanket. When this overwhelming punishment descends upon them, they will cry out in despair, acknowledging: "This is a painful torment!"
At that moment, the reality of their situation will become undeniable. The smoke will not merely pass by them — it will completely surround them, leaving no room for denial or escape. It is a punishment that strikes at the very breath of life, causing physical and spiritual agony. The disbelievers, who once mocked the warnings of the Prophet ﷺ and lived in arrogance, will finally taste the consequence of their rejection.
This verse serves as a profound reminder that Allah's punishment is certain for those who persist in disbelief, yet it also highlights His mercy — for this was a temporary affliction meant to awaken hearts, not a final destruction. The very fact that they could speak and acknowledge their suffering shows that Allah was giving them a chance to return to Him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this scene. The people who once said, "Our hearts are veiled from what you call us to," will find themselves veiled by a smoke they cannot escape. They will confess with their own tongues that this is a painful torment — a confession that comes too late for some, but for others, it becomes the door to repentance.
This verse teaches us the urgency of turning to Allah *before* the signs arrive. Do not wait until the smoke envelops you — whether that be the literal smoke of the Last Day or the consequences of your sins in this life. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent us the Qur'an and the Prophet ﷺ as clear warnings, so that we may return to Him willingly, with love and humility, rather than being forced to return through hardship.
The painful torment is real, but so is Allah's readiness to forgive. The very next verses show the disbelievers pleading, "Our Lord, remove from us the punishment; indeed, we are believers." This is the door of repentance — open it now, before the smoke comes, and you will find a Lord who is Al-Ghafoor (The Ever-Forgiving) and Ar-Raheem (The Most Merciful). Do not let arrogance delay your return, for the smoke of regret is far more painful than any physical torment.
