Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fa-artaqib (فَارْتَقِبْ): So wait/anticipate — a command to the Prophet ﷺ to await with patience and certainty.
- Yawma ta'ti al-sama'u bidukhānin mubīn (يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِينٍ): The day when the sky brings a visible, clear smoke — "mubīn" means evident, unmistakable, and manifest to all eyes.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, await with steadfastness the punishment that is drawing near for your people who persist in denial. That day will come when the sky itself will bring forth a dense, visible smoke — a sign so clear and undeniable that no one can doubt it or explain it away. This smoke will envelop all people, covering the horizon and filling their sight, and it will be said to them: "This is a painful torment." In that moment of overwhelming distress, the disbelievers will cry out in desperation, saying: "Our Lord, remove this punishment from us — if You lift it, we will surely believe in You and Your Messenger."
This verse points to a historical event that occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ when Quraysh were struck by a severe famine — they saw smoke rising before their eyes from sheer hunger and affliction. Yet, even in that state, their hardened hearts did not fully submit until the final punishment came. The command to "wait" is both a reassurance to the believers and a warning to the heedless: divine justice is certain, and no power can delay it.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: do not wait for the smoke of trials to clear your vision before you turn to your Lord. The disbelievers only remembered Allah when calamity struck, and even then, their faith was conditional — "if You remove it, we will believe." But Allah knows what is in the hearts, and He responds to sincere repentance, not to bargaining. Today, you have the greatest blessing: the Qur'an is before you, the Prophet's guidance is clear, and the door of repentance is wide open. Do not be like those who only call upon Allah in times of hardship and forget Him in times of ease. Respond to His call now, willingly and lovingly, before the day comes when you have no choice but to respond in fear. The smoke of that day was a mercy in disguise — a warning to awaken hearts before the final Hour. Let this verse be a wake-up call for you today: return to Allah before you see the smoke with your own eyes, and taste the sweetness of faith before you taste the bitterness of regret.
