Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shari'ah (شَرِيعَةٍ): A clear, divinely ordained path or way of life, a religious law and methodology.
- Min al-Amr (مِنَ الْأَمْرِ): From the Divine Command — i.e., the matter of religion and the revealed decree of Allah.
- Ahwa' (أَهْوَاءَ): Desires, whims, and capricious inclinations that deviate from truth and guidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the previous nations and their prophets, Allah addresses His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), with a profound honor and responsibility: *"Then We placed you upon a clear Shari'ah from the Divine Command."* This means Allah singled out the Prophet with a complete, comprehensive, and luminous path — a sacred law that governs all aspects of life, from creed to worship, from morality to social justice. This Shari'ah is not a human invention; it is a direct command from Allah, the All-Wise, and it perfects and supersedes all previous laws.
The verse then commands: *"So follow it"* — with full commitment, sincerity, and steadfastness. This is a directive to the Prophet first, and by extension, to every believer until the end of time. The Shari'ah is complete, and it is the only path that leads to Allah's pleasure and eternal success. There is no need for any other law, for it encompasses all that is good and beneficial for humanity.
Then comes a stern warning: *"And do not follow the desires of those who do not know."* The "those who do not know" are the ignorant ones — the polytheists of Quraysh and all who reject divine guidance. They called the Prophet to abandon his mission and return to the religion of his forefathers, driven by blind custom and personal whims. Allah forbids this absolutely, for their desires are based on ignorance and misguidance, leading only to ruin.
This verse carries a timeless lesson: the believer must anchor their life in the Shari'ah, not in the fluctuating opinions, trends, or desires of people — no matter how influential or numerous they may be. True knowledge is what comes from Allah and His Messenger; anything else is mere conjecture and illusion.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this verse. Allah Himself has placed you, as a follower of this final revelation, upon a clear path — a path that is illuminated by divine wisdom and mercy. This is not a restriction; it is a liberation from the chaos of human whims and the confusion of ever-changing desires. The Shari'ah is your compass in a world full of storms; it is your light in the darkness of ignorance.
When you follow the Shari'ah, you are not merely obeying rules — you are connecting with your Creator, aligning your will with His perfect wisdom, and securing your happiness in this life and the next. And when you are tempted to follow the desires of those who do not know — the voices that call you to compromise your faith, to abandon your principles, or to imitate the misguided — remember this verse and stand firm. Your honor lies in your obedience to Allah, and your victory lies in your adherence to His law.
Islam is not a burden; it is a mercy. The Shari'ah is not a chain; it is a shield. Embrace it with love, follow it with pride, and call others to it with wisdom and kindness. For indeed, the one who follows the Shari'ah is on the straight path, and the one who abandons it is lost in the wilderness of desires. May Allah make us among those who truly follow His command and avoid the whims of the ignorant.
