Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bayyināt (بَيِّنَاتٍ): Clear evidences, proofs, and signs that distinguish truth from falsehood.
- Min al-Amr (مِّنَ الْأَمْرِ): Of the matter/command — referring to the religious commandments and the clear guidance concerning them.
- Baghyan (بَغْيًا): Transgression, oppression, or wrongful aggression — driven by envy, rivalry, or the desire for dominance and leadership.
Tafsir (Explanation):
We granted the Children of Israel clear evidences and decisive proofs regarding the matters of religion — the lawful and the unlawful, and signs that illuminated the path of truth and distinguished it from falsehood. These were not ambiguous or obscure; they were manifest and compelling. Yet, despite this clarity, they did not fall into disagreement except after knowledge had come to them and the proof had been established against them. Their divergence was not born of ignorance, but of transgression and envy among themselves — each faction vying for status, leadership, and worldly gain, which led them to reject what they knew to be true, including the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose coming was foretold in their own scriptures.
This is a profound lesson: when people possess knowledge and still choose to deviate, their sin is far greater, and their accountability is more severe. Their disagreement was not a matter of honest scholarly difference; it was a rebellion against the truth they already recognized.
O Messenger, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning all that they disputed over in this world. He will settle every matter with perfect justice, rewarding the truthful and punishing the transgressors. Nothing will escape His knowledge, and no wrong will go unaddressed.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless warning for every community, especially this Ummah: beware of letting envy, pride, or the love of leadership drive you to oppose the truth after it has become clear to you. When Allah grants you knowledge and guidance, cherish it, unite upon it, and do not let worldly desires fragment your ranks. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to unity and warns against division — for division weakens faith, destroys brotherhood, and invites the displeasure of Allah.
Let this be a reminder that the ultimate judgment belongs to Allah alone. He is the All-Knowing, the All-Just, and His decision is final. So hold fast to the rope of Allah, seek sincerity in your intentions, and strive to be among those who uphold the truth with humility and love — not with arrogance and rivalry.
May Allah guide us all to the straight path and keep our hearts united upon His word.
