Explanation of the Verse:
Allah (Exalted be He) addresses the people of Makkah and those around them with a profound and sobering reminder: "And indeed We have destroyed the towns around you." This refers to the mighty nations that once flourished in their vicinity — such as ‘Ād, Thamūd, the people of Lūt (Lot), and the dwellers of Madyan (Midian). These were peoples of great power, advanced civilizations, and formidable structures, yet when they rejected the messengers and persisted in disbelief, their strength availed them nothing. Their cities were left in ruins, their palaces crumbled, and their legacy became a lesson for those who reflect.
Then Allah says: "And We diversified the signs" — meaning He presented His proofs and evidences in countless forms and through various means. He sent messengers, revealed scriptures, displayed miracles, and showed them the wonders of creation and the consequences of past nations. He alternated between warnings and blessings, between ease and hardship, all in the hope that they would turn back — that they would abandon their shirk (associating partners with Allah), repent from their sins, and return to the worship of their Lord alone.
The phrase "so that they might return" reveals the profound mercy and patience of Allah. He does not destroy a people without first giving them ample warning and every opportunity to reform. He sends signs not to overwhelm them, but to guide them. He destroys not out of haste, but out of justice after the truth has been made crystal clear.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical account — it is a living message for you and me. The towns destroyed around Makkah were not far away; they were neighbors, contemporaries, and peoples whose stories were known. Yet they are gone, and their fate stands as an eternal witness to the truth of Allah’s promise.
Today, we too are surrounded by signs — the rising and setting of the sun, the alternation of night and day, the rain that revives dead land, the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the very breath in our lungs. Each of these is a sign calling us to return to our Creator. The question is: will we respond before it is too late?
Allah does not need our worship, but we desperately need His mercy. He has opened the door of repentance wide, and He delights when His servant turns back to Him. Do not wait for a calamity to wake you up. Do not wait until the angel of death is at your door. Return now, while the door is open, while your heart is soft, and while your deeds can still be changed. For when a people are destroyed, there is no second chance — but you, right now, have the greatest opportunity of all: the opportunity to return to Allah before you meet Him.
