Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Ar-aytum" (أَرَأَيْتُمْ): "Tell me" or "Inform me" — a rhetorical question meant to provoke thought and challenge the listener.
- "Ma tad'oona" (مَا تَدْعُونَ): "What you call upon" — i.e., the deities and idols you worship and invoke.
- "Shirk" (شِرْكٌ): Partnership or share — here, a share in the creation of the heavens.
- "Atharah" (أَثَارَةٍ): A remnant or trace of knowledge — i.e., something left behind by earlier generations, such as scriptures or learned traditions.
The Interpretation:
O Prophet, say to those who reject the truth and worship false gods: "Tell me honestly — these idols and beings you call upon besides Allah, show me what part of the earth have they created? Have they brought forth a single mountain, a river, or any piece of land? Or do they have any share with Allah in the creation of the heavens above?" The question is a powerful challenge, exposing the absolute nothingness of these false deities. They possess no creative power whatsoever — neither in the earth below nor in the heavens above.
Then the challenge deepens: "Bring me a book revealed before this Qur'an — from Allah — that supports your claims of worshiping these idols, or bring me any remnant of knowledge passed down from the earlier peoples that justifies your practice — if you are truly truthful in your assertion that these deities deserve worship." This is a call for evidence, for proof, for any solid foundation for their beliefs. But they have none — no scripture, no divine revelation, no sound knowledge. Their worship rests on nothing but blind imitation and baseless conjecture.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse is a timeless invitation to every human being to pause and ask: What is it that I worship? Has it created anything? Can it benefit or harm me? The answer is clear — only Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of all that exists, is worthy of worship. He alone brought everything into being from nothing, and He alone deserves our love, our obedience, and our devotion. The idols of the past were powerless, and so are the false objects of worship today — whether they be statues, wealth, status, or fleeting desires. The Qur'an stands as the eternal, unaltered book of guidance, calling us to the pure worship of the One True God. Embrace this truth, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. For Allah has never left humanity without guidance — He sent His messengers and His books to illuminate the path, and the final, perfect revelation is this glorious Qur'an. Let your heart respond to its call, and you will never be lost.
