Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yartadda (يَرْتَدَّ): To turn back, apostatize, or revert from the faith to disbelief.
- Adhillah (أَذِلَّةٍ): Humble, gentle, and compassionate — soft-hearted and merciful.
- A'izzah (أَعِزَّةٍ): Stern, firm, and mighty — strong and unyielding.
- Lawmah (لَوْمَةَ): Blame, criticism, or reproach.
- La'im (لَائِمٍ): One who blames or criticizes.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance! If any of you turns back from his religion — abandoning the path of truth for disbelief, whether by embracing Judaism, Christianity, or any other deviation — know that your apostasy will never harm Allah in the least. Rather, you only harm yourselves. For Allah, in His infinite wisdom and power, will bring forth another people whom He loves and who love Him. These are people of sincere faith, purified hearts, and unwavering devotion.
Their beautiful qualities are described for us: they are gentle and humble toward the believers — lowering their wings of mercy, showing compassion, kindness, and warmth to their brothers and sisters in faith. Yet, toward the disbelievers, they are stern and mighty — firm as a lion toward its prey, unyielding in the face of falsehood, never compromising their principles for the sake of appeasing the enemies of Allah.
They strive and struggle in the path of Allah with their wealth, their lives, and their words — seeking to make the word of Allah the highest. And they fear not the blame of any blamer. They do not waver when criticized, nor do they retreat when mocked or reproached. Their only concern is the pleasure of their Lord, and they place His satisfaction above the approval of all creation. They are not like the hypocrites who hold back out of fear of what others might say, but rather they move forward with courage and certainty.
This description was perfectly embodied by Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and his noble companions who fought the apostates and those who refused to pay Zakat after the Prophet's death, as well as by the righteous people of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. They demonstrated that true faith is not merely a word on the tongue but a living reality of action, sacrifice, and steadfastness.
This is the favor of Allah — this beautiful combination of love, humility, strength, courage, and devotion — which He grants to whom He wills from His servants. It is not something that can be earned by status, wealth, or lineage, but is a pure gift from the Most Generous. And Allah is All-Encompassing in His bounty and All-Knowing of those who are worthy of this great honor.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear believer, let this verse fill your heart with hope and determination! Allah does not need us — we need Him. If we turn away, He will replace us with others who are better. But what an honor it is to be among those whom Allah loves and who love Him! Strive to embody these qualities: be gentle with your fellow believers, firm against falsehood, courageous in the face of criticism, and unwavering in your commitment to Allah's path. Do not let the blame of anyone — no matter how loud or influential — deter you from doing what is right. For the pleasure of Allah is far greater than the approval of any human being. Be among those who bring life to this Ummah, and know that Allah's bounty is vast — He is always ready to grant His favor to those who sincerely seek it.
