Word Meanings:
- مَثُوبَةً (mathubah): Reward or recompense; here it refers to the outcome and consequence of one's deeds.
- لَعَنَهُ (la'anahu): Removed him from His mercy; cursed him.
- الطَّاغُوتَ (at-taghut): Everything worshipped besides Allah while being pleased with that worship; includes idols, false deities, and any object of worship other than Allah.
- سَوَاءِ السَّبِيلِ (sawa' as-sabil): The straight and balanced path; the way of truth and righteousness.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, Allah instructs you to address those who mock and belittle the believers, saying: "Shall I inform you of something worse than what you attribute to the believers? Shall I tell you who truly deserves blame and punishment in the sight of Allah?"
The answer is clear: those who deserve the worst recompense are the ones whom Allah has cursed and driven away from His mercy, and upon whom His wrath has descended. Among them were those whose forms were transformed as a punishment for their transgression—some were turned into apes and swine. This was the fate of those who violated the sanctity of the Sabbath and those who rejected the truth after clear signs had come to them. Additionally, among them were those who worshipped false deities and obeyed Satan instead of their Lord.
These people—the cursed, the wrath-stricken, the transformed, and the idolaters—are the ones who hold the worst position and place on the Day of Resurrection. Their efforts in this worldly life were misguided and led them far astray from the straight path, because they built their lives upon falsehood and rebellion against their Creator.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse serves as a profound reminder for every soul to examine the state of their heart and their actions. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has shown us the consequences of arrogance, transgression, and stubborn rejection of truth. When a person persists in sin and mocks the guidance of Allah, they risk falling into a state far worse than any worldly humiliation.
Yet, the door of repentance remains open. The very fact that Allah mentions these examples is an invitation for us to learn from history and turn back to Him before it is too late. The believers should rejoice in the mercy of Allah, for He has distinguished them with guidance and honor. Let this verse increase your gratitude for being among those who worship Allah alone, and let it strengthen your resolve to remain steadfast upon the straight path—the path that leads to eternal bliss in the gardens of Paradise. For indeed, the worst loss is to be deprived of Allah's mercy, while the greatest success is to earn His pleasure and dwell in His proximity forever.
