Word Meanings:

  • "بِالْكُفْرِ" – meaning: while they were upon disbelief, carrying it in their hearts.
  • "يَكْتُمُونَ" – meaning: they conceal and hide within themselves.

Explanation of the Verse:

O believers, when these hypocrites from among the People of the Book come to you, they say with their tongues, "We believe in you and in what you have brought," yet their hearts are filled with disbelief. They enter your gatherings with unbelief firmly entrenched in their souls, and they leave the same way—unwavering in their rejection of the truth. Their words are nothing but a mask, a lie they use to deceive you. But Allah, the All-Knowing, is fully aware of what they conceal within their breasts. Nothing is hidden from Him—not their hypocrisy, not their schemes, and not the disbelief they try to cloak with false declarations of faith.

This verse exposes the reality of those who claim faith while their hearts are sealed with denial. They think they can deceive the believers, but they forget that Allah sees and knows all. Their hypocrisy is a disease that brings them nothing but loss in this life and the next.

A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:

Dear Muslim, let this verse be a profound lesson for you: faith is not a word uttered by the tongue alone—it is a conviction of the heart, a reality that manifests in actions and sincerity. Allah does not look at your outward appearance or your claims; He looks at your heart and your deeds. So purify your intention, be truthful with Allah, and guard yourself against hypocrisy. For the hypocrites are promised the lowest depth of the Fire, while the sincere believers are promised gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever.

And how beautiful is the path of honesty! When you are truthful with Allah, He will guide your steps, accept your deeds, and grant you peace in this life and the Hereafter. Do not be like those who say with their mouths what is not in their hearts—for Allah is aware of every secret, and He will reward you according to what you truly harbor within.

So strive to be among the truthful, those who say and believe, who act and are sincere. Indeed, Allah loves those who are truthful, and He is with the patient. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul—check your heart, correct your intentions, and draw closer to Allah with a pure and honest faith.

📜 Verse 59-63 — Al-Maidah

Say, "O People of the Scripture, do you resent us except [for the fact] that we have believed in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was revealed before and because most of you are defiantly disobedient?"
Say, "Shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that as penalty from Allah? [It is that of] those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of Taghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way."
And when they come to you, they say, "We believe." But they have entered with disbelief [in their hearts], and they have certainly left with it. And Allah is most knowing of what they were concealing.
And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of [what is] unlawful. How wretched is what they have been doing.
Why do the rabbis and religious scholars not forbid them from saying what is sinful and devouring what is unlawful? How wretched is what they have been practicing.
