Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Tanqimūn (تَنقِمُونَ): To find fault with, to disapprove of, to criticize or hold something against someone. It implies harboring resentment or objection toward something praiseworthy.
- Āmannā (آمَنَّا): We have believed with sincere faith.
- Fāsiqūn (فَاسِقُونَ): Those who deviate from the path of obedience to Allah; those who transgress His commands and break away from the straight path.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O Messenger, say to those among the People of the Book who mock you and find fault with you: "What exactly do you hold against us and criticize us for? Is there anything you resent about us other than the fact that we have believed in Allah alone, without partners, and believed in the revelation that has been sent down to us — the Qur'an — and believed in the scriptures that were sent down before us, such as the Torah and the Gospel, affirming all of them as true from Allah? And is it that we believe most of you have deviated from the truth and turned away from obedience to Allah, while we have remained steadfast upon His path?"
In this verse, Allah teaches His Prophet a powerful response to the mockery and criticism of the People of the Book. They tried to find faults in the Muslims, but the only "fault" they could point to was the Muslims' sincere faith in Allah and all His revealed books, and their acknowledgment that most of the People of the Book had strayed from true obedience to Allah. What they considered a defect was, in reality, a great virtue and an honor for the believers.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every Muslim: when the enemies of Islam criticize you, examine what they are criticizing. If they criticize you for your faith, your prayer, your honesty, your modesty, or your adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah, then know that you are upon the truth, and their criticism is actually a testimony in your favor. Let their disapproval never shake your conviction, for the path of truth has always been opposed by those who have strayed from it.
Dear believer, take pride in your faith! The very things that draw criticism from others — your devotion to Allah, your love for the Qur'an, your respect for all the prophets and scriptures, and your commitment to righteousness — are the very things that elevate you in the sight of Allah. Do not seek the approval of people at the expense of your religion. Instead, seek the pleasure of Allah, and let the criticism of the critics only strengthen your resolve, just as it strengthened the early Muslims who faced far harsher opposition with patience and dignity.
This verse also reminds us of the importance of believing in all of Allah's revelations without discrimination. A true Muslim honors the Torah and the Gospel as divine scriptures revealed by Allah, while recognizing that the Qur'an is the final and complete guidance that supersedes them. This balanced, respectful approach is a hallmark of Islamic faith and a mercy from Allah to humanity.
