Surah Qaf — Verse 26

Key Words and Their Meanings:

• جَعَلَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ – "Made with Allah another god": i.e., associated partners with Allah in worship, taking other deities alongside Him.
• فَأَلْقِيَاهُ – "Then cast him both": addressed to the two angels – the driver (sā’iq) and the witness (shahīd) – commanding them to throw him.
• الْعَذَابِ الشَّدِيدِ – "The severe punishment": the intense, overwhelming torment of Hellfire.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the separation of all creation on the Day of Judgment, Allah – Glorified and Exalted – addresses the two angels assigned to every soul: the one who drove him to the gathering place and the one who bore witness to his deeds. He commands them: "Cast into Hell every persistent disbeliever who stubbornly rejected the truth, who withheld his wealth from what was due upon him, who transgressed against Allah’s limits and His servants, and who doubted the promise of Allah and His warning. And especially cast him who took another god alongside Allah, worshipping created beings instead of the One True Creator. Throw him both into the blazing, severe punishment of the Fire – a torment that knows no relief."

This verse highlights the ultimate consequence of shirk (associating partners with Allah) – the gravest sin that Allah does not forgive. The severity of the command – repeated with emphasis – shows how detestable this crime is, and how the one who commits it deserves the harshest penalty.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect: how can a servant who owes his very existence, his breath, his heartbeats, and every blessing to Allah alone turn to lifeless idols, powerless beings, or fleeting desires and worship them alongside the Almighty? Allah, who created the heavens and the earth, who sustains all that exists, who hears every whisper and knows every secret – He alone deserves our complete devotion.

This verse is not merely a warning; it is an invitation to purify your faith. It calls you to examine your heart: have you placed anything above Allah in your love, your fear, your hope, or your obedience? Have you allowed wealth, status, or desires to become gods you serve? The path of tawheed (pure monotheism) is the path of peace and success in this life and the next. It is the key to Paradise and salvation from the severe punishment.

Turn to Allah now, before the day when no soul can intercede for another, and when the command will be given: "Cast him into the severe punishment." Let this verse be a wake-up call – a chance to repent, to renew your faith, and to worship Allah alone with sincerity. For His mercy is vast, and His door of repentance remains open until the final hour. Do not delay; embrace the pure worship of the One True God, and you will find success in this world and the Hereafter.
