Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qareenuhu (قَرِينُهُ): His companion — meaning the devil (Shaytan) who was assigned to him in worldly life.
  • Ma Atghaytuhu (مَا أَطْغَيْتُهُ): I did not make him transgress or deviate — i.e., I did not force him into error or misguidance.
  • Dalal Ba'eed (ضَلَالٍ بَعِيدٍ): Far-off misguidance — a state of being deeply and distantly removed from the path of truth and guidance.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbeliever is brought to account and the evidence is established against him, his inseparable companion — the devil who was appointed to him throughout his worldly life — will step forward to speak. This is a moment of utter abandonment and mutual disownment. The devil will say: "Our Lord, I did not compel him to stray, nor did I overpower his will. I merely whispered and invited, but he chose to follow. He was already inclined to misguidance, deeply entrenched in error, far removed from the path of faith and righteousness."

This statement is not an admission of innocence in the absolute sense, but rather a clarification that the devil's role was that of a tempter and caller to evil, while the human being had the free will to accept or reject. The devil did not force him; rather, the person willingly embraced falsehood, persisted in sin, and distanced himself from the truth until it became his very nature. The devil disowns him at this critical moment, leaving him alone to face the consequences of his own choices.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. It reveals that the devil is not a tyrant who drags people into hell against their will — he is merely a whisperer, a deceiver who decorates falsehood. The real battle is within ourselves: our desires, our arrogance, our refusal to submit to the truth. When we sin, we cannot blame Shaytan; we must take responsibility. But the beauty of Islam is that Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us the tools to overcome this enemy — through sincere repentance, seeking refuge in Allah, and clinging to the Qur'an and the Sunnah. The door of forgiveness is wide open until the moment of death. Do not wait until that Day when your companion disowns you and you stand alone with your deeds. Turn to Allah now, and He will turn to you with mercy and love.
