Word Meanings:

  • Mannāʿin lil-khayr: One who prevents or withholds good — specifically, one who obstructs what is beneficial and refuses to fulfill obligatory rights, such as charity, kindness, and supporting others.
  • Muʿtadin: One who transgresses — exceeding the limits set by Allah, whether in aggression against people or in violating His commands.
  • Murīb: One who is doubtful or skeptical — harboring uncertainty about the truth of Allah’s promises and warnings.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah describes the traits of those who will be cast into Hellfire, painting a vivid picture of their character so that we may recognize and avoid such paths. After the separation of creation on the Day of Judgment, Allah commands the angels — the one who drives the wicked and the one who bears witness against them — saying: "Cast into Hell every obstinate disbeliever who denies that Allah alone is worthy of worship, who stubbornly rejects the truth despite clear evidence."

Such a person is a preventer of good — meaning they withhold what is rightfully due from their wealth and refuse to give charity, help others, or support righteous causes. They are not merely passive in their neglect; they actively block goodness from reaching others.

They are also transgressive — exceeding the boundaries Allah has set, oppressing people, violating His laws, and committing injustices without remorse.

And they are doubtful — skeptical of Allah’s promise of reward and His warning of punishment. Their hearts are filled with uncertainty about the religion, which fuels their arrogance and rebellion.

This description serves as a powerful warning: the path to ruin is paved with disbelief, withholding good, transgression, and doubt. Yet, the Quran presents this not only as a warning but as an invitation — an invitation to reflect on your own character. Are you someone who opens doors of goodness, or closes them? Are you someone who respects boundaries, or crosses them? Are you certain in your faith, or plagued by doubt?

Islam calls you to be the opposite of these traits: be generous, be just, and be certain in your conviction. The Quran’s message is a mercy — it shows you the pitfalls so you can avoid them, and it guides you to the heights of character that lead to eternal bliss. Embrace this guidance, and let it transform your heart, for the One who revealed this verse is the Most Merciful, who loves for you to succeed.

And his companion, [the angel], will say, "This [record] is what is with me, prepared."
[Allah will say], "Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever,
Preventer of good, aggressor, and doubter,
Who made [as equal] with Allah another deity; then throw him into the severe punishment."
