Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Firrū (ففِرّوا): Flee, escape, or hasten away with urgency.
- Ilā Allāh (إلى الله): Towards Allah—meaning to His obedience, mercy, and pleasure.
- Nadhīr (نذير): A warner who clearly cautions against a looming danger.
- Mubīn (مبين): Clear, evident, and unmistakable in its warning.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O people, flee from Allah’s punishment to His mercy! This is not a flight of fear alone, but a journey of hope—a turning away from sin and disobedience, and a turning towards faith, sincere repentance, and righteous action. The call is to escape the consequences of transgression by embracing what Allah loves: belief in Him and His Messenger, following His commands, and abstaining from what He has forbidden. It is a flight from His wrath to His reward, from the fire to the garden, from distance to closeness.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) embodied this call in his own life. Whenever a matter distressed him or a trial weighed heavily upon his heart, he would turn to prayer—seeking refuge in Allah through worship and supplication. This is the essence of fleeing to Allah: making Him your sanctuary, your shelter, and your ultimate destination in every moment of hardship.
And the one delivering this message says: "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner from Him." The warning is plain and unambiguous—there is no obscurity in it, no hidden agenda. It is a call of pure compassion, like a loving guide who sees a fire ahead and shouts to the travelers to change their course before it is too late.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Beloved reader, this verse is an open door of mercy that never closes. Allah does not call you to flee from Him—He calls you to flee *to* Him. He is the destination of peace, the source of every good, and the One who welcomes His servants with open arms no matter how far they have strayed. The Prophet’s warning is not a threat to terrify you, but a mercy to awaken you. Imagine a father who sees his child walking towards a cliff—he shouts with all his might, not out of anger, but out of love. So is the call of the Messenger: a cry of love from a heart that desires nothing but your safety and success.
Today, no matter what you have done, the door of repentance is open. Run to Allah with a sincere heart, and you will find Him closer than your own jugular vein. He says in another verse: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins'" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So do not delay, do not hesitate—flee to Him now, for every moment you spend away from Him is a moment of loss, and every step towards Him is a step of eternal gain.
