Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Zawjayn (زَوْجَيْنِ): Two counterparts, pairs, or opposites — meaning two kinds, types, or species that complement each other.
- Tadhakkarūn (تَذَكَّرُونَ): That you may remember, reflect, take heed, and draw lessons.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares: "And of everything We created two counterparts, so that you may remember." This is a sweeping statement that encompasses all of creation — from the animal kingdom with its male and female pairs, to the heavens and the earth, land and sea, day and night, light and darkness, heat and cold, sweetness and bitterness, life and death, belief and disbelief, and even the pairing of the soul with the body, and the worldly life with the Hereafter.
The wisdom behind this universal pairing is to draw the attention of every thinking person to the fact that this world is built upon duality and complementarity — and wherever there is duality, there must be a Single, Unique Creator who designed it all. If creation consists of pairs, then the Creator Himself is beyond all pairs and opposites; He is One, Unique, and Absolutely Independent. This leads the reflective mind to the undeniable truth of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah) — that there is no god but Allah, the Creator of all pairs and the One who alone deserves worship.
Moreover, the pairing in creation is not random; it serves a purpose. Every pair works in harmony to sustain life, produce benefit, and maintain balance. The male and female of every species ensure the continuation of life; the alternation of night and day regulates human activity and rest; the pairing of land and sea provides resources and means of transport. All of this points to a Wise, Powerful, and Merciful Creator who did not create anything in vain.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, look around you with the eyes of your heart. Everywhere you turn, you see pairs — in the sky and on the earth, in the plants and in the animals, in your own body and soul. Does this not testify to a single, all-powerful Creator? Does this not fill your heart with awe and gratitude? The verse ends with the gentle invitation: "so that you may remember." Allah is not merely informing us of a fact; He is lovingly calling us to wake up from heedlessness, to reflect on His signs, and to turn to Him in worship and submission.
When you truly remember, you will realize that the One who created all these pairs is far greater than anything you can imagine. He is the One who deserves your love, your gratitude, and your devotion. So let this verse be a key that unlocks the door of faith in your heart — and a reminder that every time you see a pair in creation, you should remember the One who is Unique, and worship Him alone.
