Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "لَا تَجْعَلُوا" — Do not take, set up, or appoint.
- "إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ" — Another deity or object of worship.
- "نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ" — A clear, plain warner who makes the warning evident and unmistakable.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah commands His servants through the tongue of His Prophet (peace be upon him) with a clear and decisive prohibition: "And do not make with Allah another deity." This is a direct call to pure monotheism (Tawheed) — that no one and nothing should be worshipped, invoked, or revered alongside Allah. The command is not merely to avoid worshipping other gods, but to avoid even *setting them up* as partners in any form of devotion, whether in prayer, supplication, sacrifice, or reliance.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) then declares: "Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner." This means that his warning comes directly from Allah, and it is not vague or ambiguous — it is a bright, unmistakable call to save oneself from the punishment of associating partners with Allah. The repetition of this warning in the previous verses and here shows the Prophet's deep concern for his people's guidance and his eagerness to pull them away from the fire of shirk.
This verse is a timeless reminder for every believer: our hearts must be purified so that Allah alone is the object of our love, fear, hope, and worship. Any form of shirk — whether major (like praying to idols or the dead) or minor (like showing off in acts of worship) — is a grave injustice to the soul and a violation of the very purpose of our creation.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, imagine a king who gives you everything you own, protects you day and night, and asks only one thing: that you remain loyal to him alone. Would you then turn to another and offer him your allegiance? Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Provider of every breath you take, asks nothing from you but that you worship Him alone. This is not a burden — it is a mercy. It frees your heart from the chains of false hopes and misplaced devotions. When you make Allah your only God, every worry finds its answer, every prayer finds its listener, and every step you take is guided by the One who knows what lies ahead. The Prophet's warning is not to frighten you, but to save you — for there is no happiness in this life or the next except in the pure worship of the One True God. Answer his call today, and taste the sweetness of a heart that belongs to Allah alone.
