Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ḥadīth (حَدِيثٍ): Speech, discourse, or a statement—here referring to the Qur’an itself.
- Mithlihi (مِّثْلِهِ): Like it, similar to it—in its eloquence, depth, guidance, and truthfulness.
- Ṣādiqīn (صَادِقِينَ): Truthful ones—those who claim that the Prophet ﷺ fabricated the Qur’an.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse stands as an eternal challenge, a divine dare flung at the disbelievers of Makkah who accused the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ of inventing the Qur’an. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, turns their accusation into a test: *"Then let them produce a discourse like it, if they are truthful."*
The challenge is not merely to produce words—but to produce something that matches the Qur’an in its miraculous eloquence, its profound meaning, its perfect harmony, its scientific accuracy, its legislative excellence, and its transformative power over hearts and civilizations. Even if they were to collaborate—all of humanity and the jinn together—they could never bring forth its like, as Allah states elsewhere: *"Say: If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants"* (Al-Isrā’: 88).
The verse carries a subtle, powerful logic: If they truly believed the Qur’an was the work of a man, then let them match it. Let them bring any speech, any book, any composition that rivals its beauty and truth. But history has witnessed fourteen centuries of poets, orators, and linguists—enemies of Islam among them—who all failed, and continue to fail, to meet this challenge.
This is not merely a proof of the Qur’an’s divine origin—it is an invitation to reflect. The Qur’an is not a book of magic or myth; it is a living miracle that speaks to every generation. Its words have comforted the broken, guided the lost, and inspired the greatest minds of human civilization. When you read it with an open heart, you will find that no human pen could have written such a book—for it addresses the depths of the soul, the mysteries of the universe, and the realities of the unseen with a certainty that only the Creator possesses.
Dear reader, this challenge is still open. The Qur’an remains standing, unanswerable, and unrivalled. It is an invitation to you—not to compete with it, but to listen to it, to ponder it, and to let its light illuminate your path. For if the greatest minds of Arabia, masters of the Arabic language at its peak, could not produce its like, then surely this is a message from the One who created you, knows you, and loves you. Open your heart to it, and you will find in it the answers your soul has been searching for.
