Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- آلَاء (Aalaa): The countless blessings, favors, and bounties of Allah.
- تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhiban): You both deny or reject (addressed to two entities—mankind and jinn).
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a powerful, rhetorical question addressed directly to both mankind and the jinn: *"So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"* It comes as a recurring refrain throughout Surah Ar-Rahman, striking the heart of every listener with a profound challenge. Allah is not asking because He needs an answer—He is inviting you to reflect deeply on the overwhelming reality of His mercy.
Consider the sheer magnitude of what He has given you: the very breath in your lungs, the beating of your heart, the sun that rises without fail, the earth that carries you, the water that quenches your thirst, the food that sustains you, the intellect that distinguishes you, and the guidance that leads you to truth. Every single moment of your existence is wrapped in His favors—favors so numerous that they cannot be counted. Yet, despite all this, how could anyone turn away and deny even one of them?
This verse is a gentle but firm awakening. It asks you: Have you ever truly paused to count His blessings? Have you ever realized that even the ability to read this very sentence is a favor from Him? The question is not meant to shame you but to open your eyes. It is an invitation to gratitude, to humility, and to love. When you recognize that every good thing you have comes from Him alone, your heart naturally softens, your tongue begins to thank Him, and your limbs begin to obey Him.
The repetition of this verse throughout the surah is a divine call to consciousness. It is as if Allah is saying: "O My servants, look around you, look within you—how can you deny what I have so generously poured upon you?" The answer, for the believer, is clear: *We do not deny any of Your favors, O Lord. We acknowledge them all, and to You belongs all praise and gratitude.*
So, dear reader, let this verse transform your perspective. Every time you see a blessing—big or small—let your heart whisper: *"This is from my Lord."* And let your tongue respond with the words of the grateful: *"Alhamdulillah—all praise is due to Allah."* For the one who recognizes the favors of Allah and thanks Him for them, Allah promises even more. This is the path to true happiness in this life and the next. Do not be among those who see but do not reflect, who receive but do not thank. Be among the grateful, and you will taste the sweetness of faith.
