Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Rabbu (رَبُّ): The Lord, the Owner, the One Who governs, sustains, and controls all affairs.
  • Al-Mashriqayn (الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ): The two points of sunrise — referring to the easternmost and westernmost points where the sun rises during the year (in summer and winter).
  • Al-Maghribayn (الْمَغْرِبَيْنِ): The two points of sunset — referring to the two extreme locations where the sun sets during the year (in summer and winter).

The Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse proclaims that Allah alone is the Lord of the two easts and the two wests. The sun does not rise from a single fixed point throughout the year; rather, it rises from a point that shifts daily — reaching its northernmost extreme in summer and its southernmost extreme in winter. Likewise, it sets at two corresponding extreme points. Allah, in His infinite wisdom and power, precisely orchestrates this celestial movement, causing the seasons to change, the days to lengthen and shorten, and the earth to flourish with life in due measure.

This is not a matter of random cosmic mechanics; it is the deliberate, ongoing act of the Creator, Who alone owns, manages, and sustains these phenomena. No other deity shares in this lordship, and no force can alter or disrupt His decree. The verse calls upon the human mind to reflect: if the sun — this colossal, life-giving star — is merely a servant under Allah's command, moving at His will, then how can anyone turn to other than Him for help or worship?

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this for a moment: every single morning and evening, you witness a miracle that has never failed — not even once — since the beginning of time. The sun rises and sets at the exact points Allah has ordained, bringing you warmth, light, and the rhythm of life. This is not a coincidence; it is the signature of your Lord, the Most Merciful, calling you to know Him. When you see the sunrise, remember that the One Who raised it is the same One Who raised you from nothing. When you see the sunset, remember that He alone controls your days and your end.

So, turn your heart to this magnificent Lord — the Lord of the two easts and the two wests. He is closer to you than your own veins, and He loves to be called upon. Let this verse fill you with awe and love, and let it be a reminder that no matter where you are on this earth — east or west — your Lord is there, watching over you, ready to answer your prayers. Embrace this truth, and you will find peace that no worldly pursuit can ever give you.
