Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Jann (الْجَانَّ): The father of the jinn, referring to Iblis (Satan) as the progenitor of the jinn species, or the jinn themselves in their origin.
  • Marij (مَارِجٍ): A pure, intense flame of fire—one that is mixed and intertwined, free from smoke, often described as the clearest and most penetrating part of fire.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares that He created the father of the jinn—known as Al-Jann, who is Iblis—from a pure and intense flame of fire. This fire is described as *marij*, meaning a flame that is utterly clear and free of any smoke, a fire that is vibrant and blazing in its purity. This stands in contrast to the creation of humankind, as mentioned in the preceding verse, where Adam (peace be upon him) was fashioned from dry clay resembling pottery. Thus, Allah highlights the diversity of His creation: one species formed from earth and another from fire, each with its own nature and purpose.

This verse serves as a profound reminder of Allah’s absolute power and wisdom. He alone is the Creator of all things, and His creative ability knows no bounds—He brings forth from fire a being of intellect and will, just as He brings forth from clay a being of honor and responsibility. The jinn, like humans, are accountable beings who have been granted free will to choose between obedience and disobedience. Yet, despite their fiery origin, they are called to the same truth: submission to Allah alone.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

O beloved reader, ponder the greatness of the Creator who fashioned the heavens and the earth, who created both humans and jinn from different elements, yet united them in the purpose of worship. If Allah can create from fire a being that sees and hears and chooses, then surely He is capable of everything. Let this verse deepen your awe of Allah’s majesty and your gratitude for the mercy He has shown you by guiding you to Islam—the path of light and truth. Do not let the whispers of the jinn, who were created from fire, lead you astray from the straight path. Instead, seek refuge in Allah, the Most Merciful, and strive to be among those who remember Him constantly and obey His commands. For indeed, the fire that was the origin of the jinn is a reminder of the Hellfire that awaits those who reject faith, while the clay of Adam reminds us of our humble beginnings and the potential for elevation through righteousness. Choose the path of Paradise, and let your heart be filled with love for the One who created you with wisdom and purpose.

He created man from clay like [that of] pottery.

[He is] Lord of the two sunrises and Lord of the two sunsets.
