Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • آلَاء (Ālā'): The countless favors, blessings, and bounties of Allah.
  • تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhibān): You both deny or reject (addressed to both mankind and jinn).

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse is a powerful rhetorical question that Allah repeats throughout Surah Ar-Rahman as a recurring refrain, addressing both humans and jinn together. After mentioning the terrifying scenes of the Day of Judgment — where a flame of fire and molten copper will be unleashed upon the wicked, and no one will be able to help another — Allah asks: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"

The question is not seeking information, for Allah knows all. Rather, it is a profound reminder that strips the listener of every excuse. When you reflect on the blessings that surround you — the breath in your lungs, the beating of your heart, the earth beneath your feet, the sky above your head, the guidance of the Qur'an, the promise of Paradise, and even the warnings of Hellfire — how can any rational being respond with denial? Every single favor, from the smallest to the greatest, points to a Creator who is Merciful, Wise, and deserving of gratitude.

The address to "both" (you two) includes every human being and every jinn, regardless of era or location. It levels the playing field: no one can claim ignorance, because the evidence of Allah's mercy is woven into the very fabric of existence. Even the warning of punishment is itself a mercy, for it gives you the chance to turn back before it is too late.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and count even a fraction of the blessings you have received this very day. The ability to see these words, to think, to feel, to hope — each is a gift that no one but Allah could provide. When you recognize these favors, your heart naturally fills with love for your Lord, and your tongue with gratitude. And when gratitude takes root, denial becomes impossible. So ask yourself: with all that Allah has given you, which of His favors could you ever deny? Let this question awaken in you a lifelong attitude of thankfulness, drawing you closer to the One who never stops giving, even when we forget to say "Alhamdulillah."
