Word Meanings:

  • Al-Jalā’ (الْجَلَاءَ): The expulsion from one's homeland, being driven out of one's place of residence.
  • Kataba (كَتَبَ): Here it means "decreed" or "ordained" — not merely writing, but divine decree and judgment.
  • La-ʿadhdhabahum (لَعَذَّبَهُمْ): He would have punished them (in this world).

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse reveals a profound aspect of Allah’s mercy and justice in dealing with the People of the Book (the Banu Nadir tribe) who broke their covenants with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Allah informs us that had He not decreed their expulsion from their fortified homes and lands — a punishment that was itself a severe worldly trial — He would have punished them in this world with something even more devastating: being killed or taken captive. Yet, even with this lighter worldly punishment of exile, their fate in the Hereafter remains the most severe: the punishment of the Fire, where they will abide forever.

This verse teaches us several important lessons:

  1. Divine Decree is Always Just and Wise: Allah’s decisions, whether they appear as mercy or severity, are always perfectly calibrated. The expulsion of the Banu Nadir was not a random event — it was a divine decree that saved them from an even harsher worldly fate, while still preserving their ultimate accountability in the Hereafter.
  2. Worldly Punishment Can Be a Form of Mercy: Sometimes, when Allah punishes people in this world, it serves as a means of expiating their sins or as a warning to others. For the believers, any trial or hardship in this life is an opportunity for purification and elevation — a chance to draw closer to Allah through patience and trust in His wisdom.
  3. The Hereafter is the True Abode of Recompense: No matter how much punishment or mercy one experiences in this world, the ultimate and eternal reality is the Hereafter. The disbelievers who oppose Allah and His Messenger may escape some worldly consequences, but they cannot escape the Fire unless they repent and submit to Allah.
  4. A Call to Reflection and Repentance: This verse invites every reader to reflect on their own relationship with Allah. If the disbelievers faced such consequences for breaking their covenants, how much more careful should we be in fulfilling our covenant with Allah — the covenant of worship, obedience, and gratitude? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah’s mercy is vast for those who turn back to Him sincerely.

O servant of Allah, let this verse be a reminder that Allah is ever-watchful, His justice is perfect, and His mercy is near to those who seek it. Do not be deceived by temporary worldly success or delay in punishment — the Hereafter is certain, and it is the eternal life that truly matters. Strive to be among those who submit to Allah willingly, for that is the path to peace in this world and salvation in the next.

📜 Verse 1-5 — Al-Hashr

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah; but [the decree of] Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.
And if not that Allah had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.
That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah - then indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks - it was by permission of Allah and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient.
