Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Qubulan (قُبُلًا): Face to face, directly, in groups or troops, confronting them openly.
- Hasharna (حَشَرْنَا): We would have gathered or assembled.
- Kallamahum al-mawta (كَلَّمَهُمُ الْمَوْتَى): The dead would have spoken to them.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah addresses the stubbornness of the disbelievers who repeatedly demanded miraculous signs as a condition for their faith. They said: "If only angels would come down to us, or we could see our dead ancestors rise and speak to us, or we could witness every wonder we ask for—then we would believe."
Allah responds by making it clear that even if He were to grant every single one of these demands—sending angels down from the heavens for them to see with their own eyes, raising the dead to speak to them directly and confirm the truth, and gathering before them every sign and miracle they could possibly request, all presented face to face and in plain view—they still would not believe. Their disbelief was not due to a lack of evidence, but due to the corruption of their hearts and their stubborn arrogance.
The only exception is those whom Allah wills to guide, for true faith is not merely a matter of witnessing miracles—it is a gift from Allah placed in the heart of the one who sincerely seeks the truth. Even the greatest signs would not benefit a heart that has chosen blindness.
However, most of these people are ignorant of this reality. They do not realize that their own stubbornness is the true barrier, not the absence of proof. They deceive themselves into thinking that if they saw a miracle, they would believe—but Allah, who knows what is in their hearts, reveals that even then they would turn away.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth: the heart must be open and sincere before the signs can benefit it. The Qur'an itself is the greatest miracle—a living, eternal proof of Allah's truth. Yet, how many people read it and remain unmoved? The difference lies in the heart.
Dear reader, do not wait for extraordinary miracles to embrace the truth. The greatest miracle is already in your hands—the Qur'an, which challenges humanity to produce even a single chapter like it. Open your heart to it, and you will find that faith is not about seeing with the eyes, but about seeing with the soul. Allah does not force anyone to believe, but He guides those who sincerely seek Him. Let your heart be soft, your intention pure, and your quest for truth genuine—and you will find that Allah's guidance is closer to you than you ever imagined.
