Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Shayāṭīn al-ins (شياطين الإنس): The devils among mankind — those who are rebellious, wicked, and who lead others astray.
- Shayāṭīn al-jinn (شياطين الجن): The devils among the jinn — the evil spirits who whisper and tempt.
- Yūḥī (يوحي): They secretly inspire or whisper — casting ideas into one another's hearts.
- Zukhruf al-qawl (زخرف القول): Embellished, deceptive speech — beautiful words that are hollow and false on the inside.
- Ghurūran (غرورًا): As a means of delusion and deception — to trick people into falsehood.
- Yaftarūn (يفترون): They fabricate — inventing lies and falsehoods.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
Just as you, O Messenger, are facing bitter opposition from the idolaters of your people, know that this is not something unique to you — it is the sunnah (way) of Allah with all of His prophets. For every single prophet who was sent, Allah made enemies from among the rebellious and wicked of both mankind and the jinn. These devils — whether human or jinn — whisper to one another, casting beautifully decorated but utterly false words into each other's hearts. They polish lies until they shine like gold, wrapping deception in the garments of truth, so that the listener is fooled and led away from the straight path.
The human devils and the jinn devils cooperate with one another: the jinn inspire the humans with evil suggestions, and the humans carry out and spread those suggestions among people. Their goal is single — to delude and deceive, to make falsehood attractive and truth repulsive.
And if your Lord had willed that they would not do this, He could have prevented them entirely. But His divine wisdom required that this enmity exist as a test — to distinguish the patient believers from the weak-hearted, and to elevate the ranks of the prophets and their followers through steadfastness.
So, O Prophet, leave them and their fabricated lies. Do not grieve over their plots, and do not let their words disturb your heart. Their schemes will only harm themselves, and Allah's promise of victory for His messengers is certain and true.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. When you face opposition, mockery, or deception from those who oppose the truth, remember that you are walking the same path that every prophet walked. The prophets of Allah — from Nuh to Ibrahim, from Musa to 'Isa, and finally Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — all faced enemies who used beautiful words to spread falsehood. Yet they remained patient, trusting in Allah, and ultimately Allah granted them victory and honor.
So do not be discouraged when you see falsehood decorated with eloquence, or when you see people being deceived by attractive but empty speech. The truth may sometimes appear plain and simple, but it is solid and enduring, while falsehood — no matter how beautifully dressed — is fragile and destined to vanish. Allah says elsewhere: "And say: Truth has come, and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish" (Al-Isra: 81).
Hold firm to your faith, seek refuge in Allah from the whispers of the devils, and trust that the One who sent the prophets is fully capable of protecting you and granting you victory. Your duty is to convey the truth with sincerity and patience — and leave the rest to Allah, for He is the Best of planners.
