Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day of Judgment, Allah will address the disbelievers among both jinn and mankind with a question that leaves no room for excuses: "O assembly of jinn and mankind, did there not come to you messengers from among you, reciting to you My verses and warning you of the meeting of this your Day?"
The messengers were sent from among humankind, as the prophets and messengers were all human beings. However, the address includes both groups because the jinn are also accountable beings who receive the message through the human messengers. The messengers came with clear signs, reciting Allah's revelations that contained commands, prohibitions, and the distinction between good and evil. They warned their people of the terrible consequences of rejecting the truth and of standing before Allah on this Day of Reckoning.
The disbelievers will then confess, saying: "We bear witness against ourselves." They will acknowledge that the messengers did indeed come to them, delivered Allah's verses, and warned them of this Day. But despite this acknowledgment, it will be of no benefit to them, for the time of repentance will have passed.
Then Allah tells us what truly happened in this life: "And the worldly life had deluded them." The glitter, the temporary pleasures, the wealth, the status, and the fleeting desires of this world deceived them. They became so engrossed in these distractions that they forgot their purpose, ignored the warnings, and rejected the truth. They were fooled into thinking that this worldly life would last forever, or that there would be no reckoning at all.
Finally, they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. This self-testimony is a profound humiliation for them—they cannot deny what they did, and their own tongues will confirm their guilt before their Lord.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse carries a powerful lesson for every one of us. Allah, in His infinite mercy, never leaves a people without guidance. He sent messengers to every nation, and He sent the final messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), to all of humanity and jinn until the end of time. The Quran is before you today—reciting Allah's verses, commanding good, forbidding evil, and warning you of the meeting with your Lord.
Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you as they deceived those before us. The life of this world is but a passing shadow, a temporary stop on a journey that leads to eternity. Every breath you take brings you closer to that Day when you will stand before Allah, and no excuse will avail you then.
The door of repentance is open now—today, in this very moment. Do not wait until you are forced to bear witness against yourself on a Day when such testimony will only seal your fate. Turn to Allah sincerely, embrace His guidance, and live a life that will make you proud on that Day when every soul will see what it has sent forth.
Let the warning of this verse awaken your heart. Let the mercy of Allah, who sent messengers and revealed scriptures to guide you, fill you with gratitude. And let your response today be different from theirs—respond with faith, with obedience, and with love for your Creator. For indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful, and He accepts the repentance of those who turn to Him before the final hour arrives.
