Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nuwalli (نُوَلِّي): We appoint, assign, or give authority/dominion over.
- Al-Zalimeen (الظَّالِمِينَ): The wrongdoers, oppressors, and those who transgress against Allah's commands.
- Bi-ma kanu yaksibun (بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ): Because of what they used to earn — i.e., their sins, disbelief, and evil deeds.
Explanation of the Verse:
Just as Allah gave the rebellious jinn power over some people to mislead them, He likewise appoints wrongdoers from among humans to have authority over one another. This means that oppressors are made to dominate other oppressors — one tyrant is given power over another, one sinner is placed under the influence of another sinner who pushes him further toward evil, discourages him from good, and makes righteousness seem unattractive to him. This is not random or unjust; rather, it is a direct consequence of their own actions. Their sins, disobedience, and persistence in wrongdoing become the very reason they are handed over to one another. It is a form of divine justice — those who choose to follow evil are left to be influenced by evil people, and those who oppress others are subjected to oppression themselves. This is a natural and just recompense for what they have earned through their own choices.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It teaches us that our actions have consequences — not only in the Hereafter but also in this very life. When a society or an individual persists in wrongdoing, Allah may leave them to be ruled or influenced by those who are even worse. This is both a warning and an invitation: if you see corruption around you, examine your own deeds. The path to safety and honor lies in righteousness, repentance, and turning back to Allah. No oppressor remains in power forever, and no wrongdoer escapes the justice of Allah. But the door of mercy is always open — whoever abandons oppression and seeks Allah's forgiveness will find that Allah replaces their hardship with ease, and their humiliation with honor. Let this verse motivate you to be among those who enjoin good, forbid evil, and strive for justice — for Allah is with the doers of good, and He never lets the reward of the righteous be lost.
