Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghafilun (غَافِلُونَ): Those who are unaware or heedless, meaning they have not received any warning or message from Allah through His messengers.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse clarifies a profound divine principle: Allah, in His infinite justice and mercy, never destroys a community or nation for their sins while they remain in a state of ignorance—meaning they have not yet received the message of truth through a messenger. The verse states that Allah does not punish any people for their wrongdoing unless they have been clearly warned and given the opportunity to repent and reform.
The meaning here is that Allah's practice (Sunnah) is to establish proof against His creation by sending messengers, revealing scriptures, and delivering clear warnings. Only after this divine communication reaches a people, and they still choose to persist in disbelief and sin, does His justice demand accountability. No one will be punished on the Day of Judgment without having received the message of truth in a clear and understandable manner.
This verse serves as a reassurance of Allah's perfect justice—He does not act unjustly toward anyone. Rather, He grants every soul the chance to know the truth, to reflect, and to choose the right path. The destruction of past nations, like 'Ad, Thamud, and others, only occurred after their messengers came to them with clear signs, and they rejected them arrogantly.
Da'wah Reflection:
This beautiful verse fills the believer's heart with hope and trust in Allah's fairness. It tells us that our Lord is never hasty in punishment, nor does He ever overlook the necessity of guidance before accountability. Imagine the mercy of a Creator who, despite His absolute power, ensures that every soul has the chance to know Him before being judged. This is an invitation for us to appreciate the greatest blessing we have—the message of Islam, the Qur'an, and the guidance of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). If we have received this light, we must not take it lightly. Let us be among those who respond to Allah's call with sincerity, and let us share this message of mercy with others, so that they too may be among the guided, not the heedless. Allah's door of repentance is always open, and His mercy precedes His wrath—so never despair of His grace, and never delay your return to Him.
