Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah addresses the People of the Book and the disbelievers of Makkah, informing them of what was made unlawful upon the Jews as a punishment for their transgression. Allah says: "And to those who are Jews, We have forbidden every animal with undivided hooves or claws" — meaning animals whose toes are not separated, such as camels, ostriches, and birds of prey. This was a restriction placed upon them that was not placed upon this Muslim nation, as a form of divine justice for their wrongdoing.
Furthermore, Allah forbade them the fat of cattle and sheep, except for the fat carried on their backs, the fat around the intestines, or the fat that is mixed with bone — such as the tail fat of sheep and the fat attached to the ribs. This exception was made because these parts were considered permissible for them.
The reason for this prohibition is then clarified: "That is the recompense We gave them for their transgression" — meaning, because of their oppression, their killing of the prophets, their taking of usury, and their corruption, Allah punished them by making these good and pure things unlawful for them. And Allah affirms: "And indeed, We are truthful" — in what We have informed you about them, and in all that We decree.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that Allah's laws are not arbitrary; they are rooted in divine wisdom and justice. The Jews had been given abundant blessings, but when they transgressed, those blessings were restricted. For the Muslim nation, however, Allah has made all good things lawful, as a mercy and an honour. This is a call to appreciate the vast mercy of Islam, which lifts the heavy burdens that were placed upon previous nations, and to be grateful for the ease and tolerance that Allah has granted us through His final revelation. It also warns us that disobedience and arrogance can lead to the loss of blessings, while gratitude and obedience open the doors of divine favour. Let us, therefore, hold fast to the guidance of Allah and avoid the paths that lead to His displeasure, for He is the Most Just, the All-Knowing, and His promises are true.
