Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyah (آيَة): A sign, miracle, proof, or evidence — here referring to the divine signs and miracles sent by Allah to guide humanity.
- Muʿriḍīn (مُعْرِضِينَ): Those who turn away, disregard, or deliberately ignore something with indifference and neglect.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes a painful reality about the disbelievers of Makkah and those who share their attitude: whenever a sign from their Lord reaches them — whether it be the splitting of the moon, the verses of the Qur'an, or any other clear proof of Allah's oneness and the truthfulness of His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) — they turn away from it in arrogance and heedlessness. They do not engage with it, reflect upon it, or give it any consideration. Instead, they dismiss it as if it were of no importance whatsoever.
The signs of Allah are not scarce — they are abundant and clear. The universe itself is a sign pointing to its Creator. The Qur'an is a living miracle that challenges humanity to produce anything like it. The Prophet's life and character are a testament to his truthfulness. Yet, for those who have closed their hearts, no matter how many signs arrive, they remain obstinate in their rejection. The problem is not the clarity of the signs — it is the state of their hearts.
This verse serves as a profound reminder for us all: the issue is never a lack of evidence, but a lack of sincerity in seeking the truth. When a person genuinely desires guidance, Allah opens their heart to it. But when one is arrogant or attached to falsehood, even the greatest miracles will not move them.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken you to the countless signs of Allah that surround you every single day — the rising and setting of the sun, the alternation of night and day, the rain that revives dead land, the intricate design of your own body, and above all, the eternal miracle of the Qur'an. These are not random occurrences; they are messages from your Lord, calling you to Him. Do not be among those who see but do not observe, who hear but do not listen, and who receive signs but turn away.
Open your heart today. Respond to the call of your Creator before the signs cease and the opportunity passes. For Allah does not need our faith — we are the ones in desperate need of His mercy and guidance. Let every sign you encounter be a stepping stone toward Him, not a proof you ignore. Indeed, the most fortunate of people are those who see the signs of Allah and let them transform their lives.
