Tafsir (Explanation):
O Prophet, do not drive away from your gathering the poor and weak believers — those who call upon their Lord in the early morning and the late evening, worshipping Him constantly and sincerely, seeking only His noble Face and His pleasure. These are the people of true faith, whose hearts are attached to Allah, not to the fleeting gains of this world.
You have no responsibility for their deeds or their sustenance; their account is with Allah alone, and they have no responsibility for your account either. Their faith and sincerity are between them and their Lord. So do not push them away in order to please the wealthy or the leaders of the disbelievers, hoping they might embrace Islam. If you were to drive these sincere believers away, you would become among those who wrong themselves and others — those who cross the boundaries Allah has set, placing things in the wrong position.
This verse was revealed when some of the powerful Quraysh leaders expressed their disdain for sitting with the poor Muslims, and they asked the Prophet to distance them. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, defended the honor of the humble believers and made it clear that true nobility lies not in wealth or status, but in sincere faith and devotion to Allah.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is this divine instruction! It teaches us that no human being — however poor, weak, or socially insignificant — is ever worthless in the sight of Allah. The measure of a person is their heart, their sincerity, and their devotion to their Creator. This verse is a timeless lesson for all of us: never look down upon the humble believers, never distance yourself from them for the sake of worldly gain, and never let social status blind you to the true value of faith. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ who were poor — like Bilal, Ammar, and Suhayb — were among the most beloved to Allah and His Messenger. Indeed, Allah honors those who honor Him, and He raises the humble while humbling the proud. Let us love the believers for Allah’s sake, sit with the righteous, and never trade the company of the sincere for the fleeting favors of this world. For on the Day of Judgment, it is not wealth or lineage that will save us, but a heart devoted to Allah and a life lived in obedience to Him.
