Surah Al-Mulk — Verse 9

Word Meanings:

• Nadheer (نَذِير): A warner, a messenger sent by Allah to caution people against His punishment.
• Kadhdhabnā (كَذَّبْنَا): We denied and rejected the truth they brought.
• Min Shay’ (مِن شَيْءٍ): Anything at all — a complete negation of divine revelation.
• Dalāl Kabīr (ضَلَالٍ كَبِير): A great and profound misguidance, far removed from the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the keepers of Hell question the disbelievers, saying, “Did there not come to you a warner?” — the disbelievers will answer with full acknowledgment: “Yes, indeed a warner came to us.” They will not deny the arrival of the messengers, for the evidence will be undeniable. But then they will confess their crime: “We denied him and said, ‘Allah has not sent down anything at all.’” They went so far in their arrogance that they rejected not only the specific message but the very concept of divine revelation — claiming that Allah never communicated with humanity. And in their defiance, they insulted the messengers themselves, saying, “You are nothing but in great error” — turning the truth upside down and accusing the guides of misguidance while they themselves were drowning in darkness.

This verse reveals the tragic reality of those who reject the truth: they do not merely ignore the warning — they actively fight it, mock it, and declare it false. Their confession on that Day will not save them; it will only confirm their guilt. The acknowledgment that the warner came, combined with their stubborn rejection, seals their fate.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. These people admitted that the messengers came to them — they knew the truth, yet they chose to deny it out of pride and stubbornness. Today, the warner has come to you as well — through the Qur’an, through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and through the countless signs of Allah around you. Do not let your heart become like theirs. Do not wait until the Day when you will confess your error with regret that will not benefit you. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent you this warning now — so that you may return to Him before it is too late. The door of repentance is open, and His forgiveness is greater than your sins. Do not be among those who say, “We heard and we denied.” Rather, be among those who say, “We heard and we obeyed.” For the bliss of Paradise is far sweeter than the fleeting pleasures of this world, and the punishment of Hell is far more severe than any hardship you might avoid by following the truth. Embrace the guidance while you still can, and let this verse be a turning point in your journey toward Allah.
