Word Meanings:

  • نَسْمَعُ (nasma'u): To hear with attentive ears and an open heart, in a way that leads to understanding and acceptance of the truth.
  • نَعْقِلُ (na'qilu): To use one's intellect and reasoning to distinguish between right and wrong, truth and falsehood.
  • السَّعِيرِ (as-sa'ir): The blazing, fiercely burning Fire of Hell.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are cast into the blazing Fire, they will cry out in regret and self-reproach, admitting their grave mistake. They will say: "If only we had truly listened — not just with our ears, but with hearts seeking the truth — or if only we had used our minds to reflect upon what the messengers brought us, we would never have been among the companions of the Fire."

This confession reveals a profound truth: the disbelievers were not lacking in hearing or intellect by nature. Rather, they refused to use these God-given faculties in the way they were intended. They heard the Quran but did not listen with sincerity; they had minds but did not ponder over the signs of Allah. Their tragedy was not ignorance, but willful neglect of the very tools Allah gave them to find the truth.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder for us today. How often do we hear the words of the Quran, yet let them pass through our hearts without effect? How often do we possess the intellect to reflect on the universe around us, yet fail to see the Creator's hand in it all? The disbelievers' regret on that Day will be overwhelming, but for us, the door of opportunity is still open. Let us not wait until regret is useless. Let us open our ears to the call of truth and engage our minds in reflection, so that we may be among those who are saved from the Fire and admitted into eternal bliss. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this life as a chance to listen, to reason, and to return to Him before it is too late.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Mulk

It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"
They will say," Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allah has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"
And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."
And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze.
Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.
