Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ (bi-ni'mati rabbika): By the grace and blessing of your Lord — referring specifically to the blessing of prophethood and messengership.
  • بِمَجْنُونٍ (bi-majnūn): Insane, mad, or afflicted with a disorder of the mind.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse comes as a direct, comforting response to the slanderous accusations made by the disbelievers of Makkah against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). When the Prophet began calling people to Islam, his enemies — desperate to discredit him — spread lies, claiming he was a madman or possessed by jinn, hoping to turn people away from his message.

Allah, the Most Merciful, immediately defends His beloved Messenger with these powerful words: "You are not, by the grace of your Lord, a madman."

The verse carries profound meaning on multiple levels:

First, it establishes the Prophet's complete sanity and soundness of mind. The accusation of madness was utterly false — the Prophet's wisdom, eloquence, justice, and the profound truths he conveyed were themselves the clearest proof of his perfect intellect. No madman could produce the Qur'an, with its unmatched eloquence and depth, nor could he maintain such impeccable character and consistency in his mission.

Second, the phrase "by the grace of your Lord" reminds us that the Prophet's protection from such deficiencies and his elevation to prophethood were purely from Allah's favor. It was not by his own doing, but by divine choice and mercy. This also implies that Allah's grace upon him — the gift of prophethood — is itself the greatest proof against such accusations. Would Allah choose a madman to carry His final revelation to humanity? Absolutely not.

Third, there is a subtle but powerful rhetorical point: the verse does not merely say "you are not mad," but rather ties it to Allah's grace. This suggests that the very blessings Allah bestowed upon the Prophet — wisdom, revelation, sound judgment, and moral excellence — are incompatible with insanity. The blessing itself refutes the accusation.

This verse also carries a timeless lesson for believers: when we are slandered or falsely accused, we should not despair. Truth will always prevail, and Allah defends those who sincerely serve His cause. The Prophet faced such painful accusations with patience and steadfastness, and Allah responded by affirming his honor and dignity.

Moreover, this verse teaches us the importance of defending the honor of righteous people. Just as Allah defended His Prophet, we too should stand up for truth and protect the reputation of those who are unjustly attacked.

The verse concludes in the following ayah with the ultimate reassurance: the Prophet will receive an unending reward for his patience and perseverance, and he is indeed upon an exalted standard of character. So let every believer take heart — Allah sees your struggles, knows your sincerity, and will never let the lies of your detractors diminish your reward.
