Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أَجْرًا (Ajan): Reward, recompense, or due compensation for one's efforts and patience.
  • غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ (Ghayra Mamnunin): This phrase carries two profound meanings: (1) a reward that is uninterrupted and everlasting—never cut off or terminated; and (2) a reward that is untainted by reproach or favor—no one can remind you of it as a favor, nor is it given with any sense of obligation or diminishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah (Glorified be He) addresses His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, offering him the most comforting and reassuring words after the hardships he endured in conveying the message of Islam. The verse comes right after the disbelievers accused the Prophet of madness, but Allah refutes this by swearing by the pen and what it writes—a symbol of knowledge, wisdom, and civilization—and then declares: "And indeed, for you is a reward never cut off."

This means that the Prophet (peace be upon him) will receive a tremendous, continuous, and everlasting reward from his Lord for his patience, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to delivering the divine message despite the mockery, rejection, and persecution he faced. This reward is not like the wages of this world, which can be deducted, withheld, or ended; rather, it is a reward that flows endlessly, both in this life (through the spread of his message and the love of the believers) and in the Hereafter (through the highest stations of Paradise).

Moreover, the phrase "ghayra mamnunin" also signifies that this reward is given freely and generously by Allah, without any sense of obligation or reproach—no one can claim credit for it, and no one can diminish its value. It is a pure, unblemished gift from the Most Merciful.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a timeless source of hope and motivation for every believer who strives in the path of Allah. Just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) was promised an unending reward for his patience, every Muslim who works for the sake of Allah—whether through teaching, helping others, or enduring trials with faith—should know that their efforts are never wasted. Allah sees every sacrifice, every tear, and every moment of steadfastness, and He has prepared a reward that surpasses all imagination. So, dear reader, never feel discouraged by the criticism or rejection of others; your Lord is the Best of Providers, and His reward is limitless. Hold firm to your faith, and trust that Allah's promise is true—for His bounty is never cut off, and His mercy encompasses all.
