Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿAdhāb — punishment, torment, or severe affliction.
- Rabbi-him — their Lord (the One Who created, sustains, and owns them).
- Ghayru Maʾmūn — not to be felt secure from, not guaranteed to be warded off, not safe from occurring.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a continuation of the description of the believers who are steadfast in their prayers, who give their due charity, who believe in the Day of Recompense, and who are deeply conscious of their Lord. Their hearts are filled with a reverent fear of Allah’s punishment, and this verse explains why: "Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not to be felt secure from."
No matter how righteous a person is, no matter how many good deeds they accumulate, they can never claim absolute safety from Allah’s punishment in this life or the next. The punishment of Allah is severe, just, and certain for those who deserve it. No rational person can feel completely secure from it, because human beings are fallible, and none of us knows the final state of our hearts or deeds. This fear is not a paralyzing terror, but a healthy, motivating awareness that keeps the believer humble, vigilant, and constantly turning back to Allah in repentance and seeking His mercy.
The verse teaches us a profound truth: true faith is accompanied by a balance of hope in Allah’s mercy and fear of His punishment. The believer does not become arrogant or overconfident in their own deeds, nor do they despair of Allah’s mercy. Rather, they live in a state of hopeful caution — striving to do good, while never forgetting that Allah’s justice is perfect and His punishment is real.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse is a beautiful reminder for every Muslim to never become complacent in their worship. The companions of the Prophet ﷺ were the best of people, yet they would tremble with fear when they heard verses about Allah’s punishment. This fear is a sign of living faith — it pushes us to pray more, give more, seek forgiveness more, and draw closer to Allah. At the same time, it should not lead us to despair, for Allah’s mercy is vast and His door of repentance is always open. The believer walks the path of life with two wings: the wing of hope and the wing of fear, soaring toward Allah’s pleasure while never forgetting His might. Let this verse inspire you to examine your heart: do you truly fear Allah’s punishment? Do you live with that beautiful balance that the Qur’an teaches? If so, then you are on the path of the successful believers — those who will be honored in the gardens of Paradise, safe from every fear and sorrow.
