Word Meanings:

  • Amānātihim (أماناتهم): Trusts or things entrusted to them, whether by Allah or by people — including wealth, secrets, honor, and religious duties.
  • ʿAhdihim (عهدهم): Their covenants or agreements — both with Allah (such as obligations of faith and worship) and with people (such as promises, contracts, and commitments).
  • Rāʿūn (راعون): Those who are mindful, protective, and diligent in preserving and fulfilling what is entrusted to them.

Explanation of the Verse:

After describing the believers who guard their chastity and restrain their desires within the lawful boundaries set by Allah, the verse continues to paint a beautiful portrait of their character: "And those who are mindful of their trusts and their covenants."

These are people who take seriously every trust placed upon them — whether it is the trust of Allah, such as prayer, fasting, and the obligations of faith, or the trust of fellow human beings, such as wealth, secrets, positions, or responsibilities. They do not betray, deceive, or neglect. They are people of integrity, known for their reliability and honesty.

Likewise, they honor their covenants. When they make a promise, they keep it. When they enter into a contract or agreement, they fulfill their side faithfully. They do not break their word, nor do they use loopholes to escape their commitments. Their word is their bond, and their actions match their speech.

This quality — trustworthiness and covenant-keeping — is a cornerstone of Islamic character. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known as "Al-Amin" (the Trustworthy) even before his prophethood, and this verse reminds us that true faith is not merely a matter of ritual, but of moral excellence in dealing with others.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, imagine a society where everyone honors their trusts and keeps their promises — where employers are fair, employees are honest, friends are loyal, and rulers are just. That is the society the Quran envisions. This verse invites you to be that person: someone whom others can rely on without doubt, someone whose word carries weight, and someone who stands before Allah with a clear conscience, having fulfilled every trust and covenant.

Let this be your daily practice: guard your tongue, protect what is entrusted to you, and honor every commitment you make — for these are the qualities that elevate you in this world and secure your place in the gardens of delight in the Hereafter. Allah loves those who are faithful, and He has prepared for them a reward beyond imagination.

📜 Verse 30-34 — Al-Ma'arij

Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive
And those who are in their testimonies upright
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
