Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Shahādātihim (بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ): Their testimonies — plural form indicating all types of testimonies they are called upon to bear, whether in legal disputes, rights of people, or matters of truth and justice.
- Qā'imūn (قَائِمُونَ): Standing firm, upholding, fulfilling — not merely performing the act but doing so with steadfastness, integrity, and full commitment.
Explanation of the Verse:
After describing the believers who guard their chastity and maintain their trusts and covenants, Allah continues to paint the portrait of His righteous servants by mentioning another of their noble qualities: they stand firm in their testimonies. This means they bear witness with absolute truthfulness, without distortion, addition, or omission — regardless of whether the testimony is for or against themselves, their relatives, friends, or enemies. They do not let personal feelings, family ties, or worldly interests sway them from speaking the truth. They uphold their testimonies when called upon to give them, and they never conceal evidence or alter facts, knowing that bearing witness is a sacred trust from Allah.
This quality is a manifestation of deep faith and moral courage. The believer understands that a testimony is not merely a legal formality but a religious obligation — a means of establishing justice on earth. When they stand to testify, they stand as servants of Allah, not as servants of their desires or interests. They know that Allah sees and hears all, and that concealing the truth is a sin that corrupts both the individual and society.
The verse uses the plural "testimonies" to encompass all situations where truth must be spoken — in courts, in daily dealings, in advising others, and in confirming what is right. It reflects a life built on honesty and integrity, where the believer's word is their bond, and their testimony is a pillar of justice in their community.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Imagine a society where every person stands firm in their testimony — where no one lies, no one conceals, no one distorts. Such a society would be free from oppression, corruption, and injustice. This is the society Islam seeks to build, and it begins with you and me. When you speak the truth — even when it is difficult, even when it is against your own interest — you are not just fulfilling a legal duty; you are worshipping Allah and elevating your soul. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Bear witness to the truth, whether it is for you or against you." This is the character of the believers — they are beacons of honesty in a world that often compromises the truth for convenience.
So ask yourself: Are you among those who stand firm in their testimonies? Do you speak the truth even when it costs you? Remember that Allah has promised His righteous servants gardens of delight and honor in the Hereafter. Every truthful word you utter is a step toward that eternal reward. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of unwavering integrity — for the truth is always the path to Allah's pleasure, and there is no success greater than that.
