Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Wa'sbir" (وَاصْبِرْ): Be patient, endure with steadfastness and self-restraint.
  • "Ala ma yaqulun" (عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ): Upon what they say — referring to the mockery, insults, and false accusations directed at the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the religion of Islam.
  • "Wa'hjurhum" (وَاهْجُرْهُمْ): And distance yourself from them, leave them alone, and avoid engaging with them.
  • "Hajran jameelan" (هَجْرًا جَمِيلًا): A beautiful, graceful departure — meaning a separation that is free from harm, revenge, or harshness.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse carries a profound divine command to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and by extension, to every believer who carries the message of truth — to remain patient in the face of the hurtful words spoken by the disbelievers. They mocked him, insulted him, and rejected the revelation he brought, yet Allah did not command him to respond with anger or retaliation. Instead, He instructed him to exercise beautiful patience — a patience that is not merely passive endurance, but an active, dignified restraint rooted in trust in Allah.

The second part of the command — "and leave them with a beautiful leaving" — means to distance oneself from them in a manner that is noble and free from any form of harm or aggression. It is not a call to sever ties out of hatred or spite, but rather a strategic and spiritual disengagement: do not busy yourself with them, do not seek revenge, and do not lower yourself to their level. This "beautiful abandonment" is one in which the believer turns away from the oppressor’s insults while keeping the door of guidance open, and leaves the matter entirely to Allah, who is the Best of Judges.

This verse teaches us a timeless principle: when you are met with hostility and false accusations for the sake of truth, your strength lies not in retaliation, but in patience and dignified withdrawal. It is a call to protect your heart from being consumed by the noise of your detractors, and to focus instead on your mission with clarity and serenity. The "beautiful leaving" also implies that you do not let their words provoke you into actions that contradict the noble character Islam instills in you — for the best response to ignorance is often a graceful silence and a firm commitment to your principles.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Imagine the weight of this command: the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most beloved of people to Allah, yet he was told to be patient and to turn away gracefully — not because he was weak, but because his strength was in his character and his reliance on Allah. This is the hallmark of true faith: when you are wronged, you do not repay evil with evil, but you elevate yourself above the fray, trusting that Allah sees all and will settle every account with perfect justice. This verse is a source of immense comfort for every believer who faces mockery or rejection for their faith — it reminds you that your worth is not determined by the words of others, but by your steadfastness in the path of Allah. And it invites you to reflect: how beautiful is the religion that teaches its followers to respond to hatred with patience, and to opposition with grace! This is the character that draws hearts to Islam — a character that shines even in the darkest of circumstances.
