- Qaleelan (قَلِيلًا): A little while — a short, limited period of time.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a profound declaration of divine justice and a source of immense comfort for the believer. Allah addresses His beloved Messenger (peace be upon him) directly, saying: "Leave Me with those who deny the truth and who are immersed in the luxuries of this worldly life."
The meaning is clear: O Prophet, do not let their rejection, mockery, or arrogance weigh on your heart. Do not exhaust yourself in grief over them or attempt to bring them to faith by your own efforts. Hand them over to Me — for I am fully aware of their deeds, and My justice is absolute. They may enjoy their wealth, their status, and their fleeting pleasures, but these are nothing but a temporary illusion.
Then Allah says: "And grant them a little respite." This is a divine promise wrapped in a warning. Their delay in punishment is not a sign of acceptance or neglect — rather, it is a measured, purposeful postponement. The "little while" is short indeed, for when the appointed time comes, the reckoning will be swift and decisive. History bears witness: the very leaders of Quraysh who reveled in luxury and mocked the truth met their end at the Battle of Badr — a mere handful of years after this verse was revealed.
This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: never envy the affluent who live in heedlessness and deny the truth. Their comfort is temporary, and their end is with the One who never fails to keep His promise. As believers, we are called to focus on our own relationship with Allah, to trust His plan, and to know that His justice — whether in this world or the Hereafter — is certain. The respite they are given is not for their benefit alone; it is an opportunity for them to reflect and return, and a test of patience for the believers. So hold firm, do not be shaken by the glitter of this world, and place your complete trust in the One who controls all affairs.
