Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Aw zid 'alayh" (أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ): Or increase upon it — meaning, increase the time of night prayer beyond the half, up to two-thirds of the night.
  • "Wa rattil al-Qur'ana tartilan" (وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا): And recite the Quran with measured, slow, and distinct recitation — making the letters clear, pausing properly, and reflecting on the meaning.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah commanded His Prophet ﷺ to stand in prayer for half the night, or a little less than that (down to one-third), He now grants another option: increase upon the half until you reach two-thirds of the night. So the believer is given a beautiful flexibility — whether one-third, half, or two-thirds — all are acceptable within this divine framework of night worship.

Then comes the second command, which is a treasure in itself: "And recite the Quran with tartil" — that is, with slow, deliberate, and beautiful recitation. This means pronouncing every letter clearly from its correct articulation point, observing the rules of tajweed, pausing at proper places, and — most importantly — pondering over the meanings so that the heart is moved and the soul is transformed. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite the Quran slowly, letter by letter, and his recitation was described as clear and distinct, as if each verse was being engraved upon his heart.

A Call to Action for the Believer:

Dear Muslim, this verse is not merely historical — it is a living invitation to you. Allah is telling you that the night is a precious time to draw near to Him, and the Quran is the means of that closeness. When you recite the Quran with tartil, you are not just reading words; you are conversing with your Lord. Every letter you pronounce correctly earns you ten rewards, and every moment of reflection deepens your faith.

The beauty of this command is that it combines quantity with quality — the length of prayer with the depth of recitation. It teaches us that our worship should not be rushed or mechanical, but rather heartfelt and deliberate. So, dear believer, carve out a portion of your night — even a small one — and recite the Quran slowly, beautifully, and thoughtfully. Let its verses wash over your heart, heal your wounds, and illuminate your path. This is the way of the righteous, the path to tranquility in this life and success in the next.
