Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- وَاللَّيْلِ (And by the night): An oath sworn by Allah upon the night.
- إِذْ أَدْبَرَ (when it departs): When it turns away and goes, meaning when it withdraws and vanishes with the approach of dawn.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah—Glorified be He—swears by the night at the moment it retreats and fades away, yielding to the approaching light of morning. The oath here is a profound call to reflect upon the cosmic order: just as the night departs without fail, making way for the dawn, so too is the truth of Allah’s promise inevitable and certain. The departure of the night is not a random event; it is a sign of Allah’s absolute power and meticulous design, reminding us that He who orchestrates the turning of day and night is fully capable of resurrecting creation and bringing about the Hour.
This oath follows the mention of the moon in the preceding verse, forming a sequence of divine affirmations that underscore the certainty of the warning about the Hellfire and the Day of Judgment. The imagery of the night receding is a beautiful metaphor: darkness, no matter how deep or overwhelming, is always followed by light. Similarly, the trials of this world, the doubts of the disbelievers, and the plots of the enemies of truth shall all come to an end, and the radiant truth of Allah’s promise shall prevail.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Beloved reader, ponder this scene: the night, with all its stillness and mystery, turns its back and departs the moment the first rays of dawn appear. It does not linger, nor does it resist. This is the unbreakable law of Allah, and within it lies a gentle yet powerful lesson for every soul. If you find yourself in the darkness of sin, despair, or heedlessness, know that the dawn of repentance and divine mercy is near. Allah has made the night to depart, and He has made it easy for you to leave behind your transgressions and turn to Him. The same Lord who commands the night to retreat commands you to draw closer to Him through obedience, and He promises that His mercy embraces all who seek it. Do not let the darkness deceive you—the light of faith is always within reach, and the gates of forgiveness are wide open for those who knock with sincerity.
