Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- As-Subh (الصبح): The dawn, the early morning light.
- Asfara (أسفر): It shone brightly, became clearly visible and illuminated, dispelling the darkness.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) takes an oath by the dawn when it breaks forth with its radiant light. The dawn is that magnificent moment when darkness recedes and the horizon is flooded with clarity and illumination. It is a time of renewal, hope, and awakening—when the world transitions from the obscurity of night to the brightness of day.
This divine oath follows the swearing by the moon and the departing night, forming a powerful sequence of cosmic signs. Just as the moon illuminates the darkness and the night gives way to the morning, so too does the truth of the Prophet's message shine through the darkness of ignorance and falsehood. The dawn breaking forth symbolizes the emergence of truth after the trials of falsehood, and the clarity that comes after confusion.
Allah's oath by these magnificent creations serves to draw human attention to the greatness of His power and the certainty of His warnings. The purpose of these oaths is to affirm that the Day of Judgment and the Fire are indeed among the greatest calamities—realities that no one should doubt. The dawn, with its unmistakable brightness, is a reminder that just as the sun inevitably rises, so too will the promised Hour come to pass. No one can prevent it, and no one can deny its approach.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, contemplate the beauty of the dawn that you witness every single day. It comes without fail, pushing away the darkness with its gentle yet powerful light. This is not a random occurrence—it is a sign from your Lord, inviting you to reflect on His greatness and His promises. If Allah can swear by such a magnificent creation, how certain must His promises be?
Let this verse inspire you to rise with the dawn in prayer and remembrance. Let the light of the morning remind you to seek the light of guidance in your heart. The same Allah who commands the sun to rise and the darkness to flee is the One who has promised Paradise to those who believe and do righteous deeds. Embrace this truth, draw closer to your Creator, and let the light of faith illuminate your path just as the dawn illuminates the earth. Do not let the darkness of heedlessness overcome you, for the morning always comes—and so too will the Day when every soul shall see the results of its deeds.
