Surah Al-Muddaththir — Verse 32

• Kallā (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of denial and rebuke, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It firmly refutes the false claims or notions mentioned before it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse begins with a decisive negation: "No indeed!" — a stern rebuttal of the disbelievers' false claims and their attempts to belittle the Message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) or to dismiss the reality of the Hereafter. They had said, for instance, that the keepers of Hell were few and weak, or that they could resist them — but Allah refutes such arrogance entirely.

Then Allah swears an oath by the moon — a magnificent celestial body that illuminates the night sky, whose phases are a sign of His wisdom and power. By swearing by the moon, Allah draws our attention to His magnificent creation, inviting us to reflect upon its perfection and the greatness of its Creator. The oath serves as a powerful prelude to the grave warning that follows in the coming verses about the Fire of Hell — a reality so immense and terrifying that Allah swears by His mighty creations to affirm it.

This verse teaches us that the Qur'an does not merely inform — it engages the heart, stirs the soul, and calls the intellect to ponder the universe around us. When Allah swears by His creation, it is an invitation for us to look up at the sky, contemplate the moon in its phases, and realize that the One who set it in perfect order is more than capable of fulfilling every promise He has made.

Dear reader, when you gaze at the moon tonight, remember that the same Lord who hung it in the heavens as a light and a measure of time is speaking directly to you in this verse. He is telling you: do not be deceived by falsehood, do not be arrogant in your disbelief, and do not think that you can escape His justice. The moon you see is but one of countless signs pointing to His majesty. Let it remind you to turn to Him, to submit to His will, and to prepare for the Day when every soul shall be recompensed for what it has earned. The Qur'an is not a book of tales — it is a call to truth, a guide to salvation, and a mercy for all of humanity. Answer that call with an open heart, and you will find peace in this life and the next.
