Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Nutfah (نُّطْفَةٍ): A drop of fluid — referring to the seminal fluid.
  • Amshāj (أَمْشَاجٍ): A mixture — meaning the mingling of the male's fluid with the female's fluid, forming a combined, blended substance.
  • Nabtalīhi (نَّبْتَلِيهِ): We test him — meaning We try him and put him to trial through divine commands and prohibitions.
  • Samīʿan Baṣīran (سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا): Hearing and seeing — endowed with the faculties of hearing and sight.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah, the Exalted, declares His absolute power and wisdom in the creation of the human being. He says: "Indeed, We created the human being from a mixed drop of fluid" — a humble, insignificant beginning that combines the essence of both the man and the woman. This tiny, blended drop — unseen by the naked eye — carries within it the entire blueprint of a human being, with all its complexity, beauty, and potential.

From this lowly origin, Allah elevates the human being to a position of honor and responsibility. He says: "We test him" — meaning that this life is not a mere accident or a purposeless game. Rather, it is a deliberate trial. The human being is placed on this earth to be examined: will he recognize his Creator? Will he obey His commands and avoid His prohibitions? Will he use his faculties for good or for evil?

To enable him to pass this test, Allah granted him the essential tools: "So We made him hearing and seeing." These two faculties are singled out because they are the primary gateways to knowledge and guidance. Through hearing, the human being receives the revelation — the verses of the Qur'an, the call to truth, the admonition of the prophets. Through sight, he observes the signs of Allah in the heavens and the earth — the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the oceans, the intricate design of his own body — all pointing to the existence and greatness of the Creator.

These gifts are not given in vain. They are a trust and a responsibility. The ears are meant to listen to the truth and act upon it; the eyes are meant to observe the signs and reflect upon them. Whoever uses these faculties to seek the truth and submit to his Lord will be guided to success. And whoever turns away, using his hearing and sight to pursue falsehood and disobedience, will bear the consequences.

So reflect, dear reader, upon this profound beginning: from a mere drop, you were fashioned. You were given hearing and sight not for amusement, but for a purpose — to know your Lord, to worship Him, and to prepare for the meeting with Him. This is the essence of the test. And the One who created you from nothing is fully capable of bringing you back after death for the final reckoning.

Let this verse awaken within you a sense of gratitude and purpose. Every time you hear the call to prayer, every time you see a sign of Allah's creation, remember: you are being tested, and these faculties are your means to succeed. Embrace the path of faith and gratitude, and you will find eternal bliss. Turn away in ingratitude, and you will face the consequences. The choice is yours — for Allah has made it clear, and He has given you the ears to hear and the eyes to see.

1هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى الْإِنسَانِ حِينٌ مِّنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْئًا مَّذْكُورًا
Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?
2إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ سَمِيعًا بَصِيرًا
Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.
3إِنَّا هَدَيْنَاهُ السَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
4إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ سَلَاسِلَ وَأَغْلَالًا وَسَعِيرًا
