Word Meanings:

  • Hadaynāhu (هَدَيْنَاهُ): We showed him, guided him, and made the path clear to him.
  • Al-Sabīl (السَّبِيلَ): The way, the path — referring here to the path of guidance and the path of misguidance, truth and falsehood.
  • Shākiran (شَاكِرًا): Grateful, thankful — one who acknowledges Allah's blessings and responds with faith and obedience.
  • Kafūran (كَفُورًا): Ungrateful, disbelieving — one who denies Allah's favours and rejects the truth.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah the Exalted declares that He has clearly shown every human being the path — the way of right and wrong, of guidance and error, of good and evil. This is not a vague or hidden matter; rather, Allah has made the truth evident through His messengers, His revealed Books, the natural disposition (fitrah) He placed within every soul, and the countless signs scattered across the universe and within ourselves.

After this divine clarification, the choice rests with the individual. A person will either be one of two types:

  1. A grateful believer (shākir) — one who recognises the truth, embraces faith, and responds to his Lord with gratitude, worship, and obedience. Such a person walks the straight path and attains success in this life and the Hereafter.
  2. An ungrateful disbeliever (kafūr) — one who, despite the clarity of the evidence, turns away, rejects the truth, and denies his Lord's favours. Such a person chooses misguidance and bears the consequences of his own choice.

The verse emphasises that Allah does not force anyone to believe or disbelieve. He has granted humanity intellect, free will, and clear guidance — and then left the choice to each soul. This is a manifestation of Allah's perfect justice: no one will be punished except after the proof has been established, and no one will be rewarded except for what they genuinely chose.

A Call to Reflection and Gratitude:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent verse. Your Lord has not left you in darkness or confusion. He has illuminated the path for you — through the Quran, through the Prophets, and through the innate conscience He placed within you. Every sunrise and every breath you take is a sign pointing to your Creator. The choice is yours: will you be among the grateful who recognise their Lord and worship Him with love and submission, or among the ungrateful who turn away from such overwhelming mercy?

The path of gratitude leads to peace in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. The path of ingratitude leads only to loss and regret. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has made the way clear — He only asks that you open your heart to the truth and respond with thankfulness. Let this verse be a turning point for you: choose gratitude, choose faith, and taste the sweetness of knowing your Lord.

📜 Verse 1-5 — Al-Insan

Has there [not] come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing [even] mentioned?
Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.
Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kafur,
