Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • ʿalā ḥubbihi (عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ): Despite their love for it, or while they themselves desire and need it.
  • Miskīnan (مِسْكِينًا): A poor person who is unable to earn a living and possesses nothing of worldly goods.
  • Yatīman (يَتِيمًا): A child whose father has died before he reached maturity, leaving him without financial support.
  • Asīran (أَسِيرًا): A captive, including prisoners of war from among the disbelievers or others.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse paints a breathtaking portrait of the righteous servants of Allah, describing their noble character and selfless generosity. It tells us that these believers feed food to others despite their own love for it — meaning they give while they themselves are in need and have a strong desire for that very food. This is not the charity of the wealthy who give from their surplus; rather, it is the sacrifice of those who share what they cherish most, prioritising others over their own cravings.

They extend this kindness to three specific categories of people:

  1. The Miskīn (the poor) — one who is destitute, unable to earn a living, and has nothing of this world's provisions.
  2. The Yatīm (the orphan) — a young child who has lost his father and is left vulnerable and dependent on others.
  3. The Asīr (the captive) — prisoners of war or those held in captivity, who are entirely at the mercy of others.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson in Islamic ethics: true charity is not measured by what we give when we have abundance, but by what we give when we ourselves are in need. The believers described here do not seek reward or praise from people — their intention is purely for Allah's pleasure and to seek His mercy on the Day of Judgment, a day so severe that faces will frown and foreheads will wrinkle from its terror.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, look at the beauty of this divine description! Allah is not merely telling us about historical figures — He is showing us the path to His love and to Paradise. The gates of Jannah are opened by the keys of compassion and selflessness. When you feed a hungry person while you yourself are hungry, when you help an orphan who has lost the protection of a father, when you show kindness to a captive who has no power over his own fate — you are walking in the footsteps of the beloved of Allah.

This verse invites us to examine our own hearts: Do we give only from our excess, or do we share what we love? Do we seek people's praise, or do we seek Allah's pleasure alone? The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best charity is that given when you are in need and striving" (narrated by Bukhari). Let this verse inspire you to be among those who give generously, sincerely, and consistently — for Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good. The pleasure of Allah, the shade of His Throne on the Day of Judgment, and the eternal bliss of Paradise await those who feed others for His sake.

📜 Verse 6-10 — Al-Insan

A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allah will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].
They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
[Saying], "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.
Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."
