Word Meanings:

  • لِوَجْهِ اللهِ (for the Face of Allah): Seeking only Allah’s pleasure and His divine countenance, with complete sincerity and devotion.
  • جَزَاءً (reward/recompense): Any worldly compensation or payment in return for the act.
  • شُكُورًا (gratitude/thanks): Verbal praise, acknowledgment, or expressions of thankfulness from the recipients.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse captures the inner conviction and heartfelt intention of the righteous servants of Allah. When they feed the poor, the orphan, and the captive—despite their own need for the food—their hearts utter silently, not with their tongues but with their sincere belief: "We feed you only for the sake of Allah’s pleasure. We seek neither any payment from you nor even your thanks."

This statement reflects the purest form of sincerity (ikhlas). They do not announce this to the people they feed, nor do they seek recognition or praise. Rather, this is the state of their hearts—a profound realization that their actions are solely for their Creator. They desire no worldly return, no favor in exchange, and not even a word of appreciation. Their sole ambition is the reward stored with Allah, and their fear of His severe reckoning on the Day of Judgment—a day when faces will frown and brows will furrow from its overwhelming terror—drives them to this extraordinary level of selflessness.

This verse teaches us that true charity is not measured by what we give, but by the purity of our intention behind it. The believers described here reached a station where they gave while loving what they gave, and they gave to those who could never repay them—the destitute, the orphan, and even the captive enemy. Their generosity transcended all social boundaries and personal expectations.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this Islamic teaching! Islam elevates charity from a mere social transaction to an act of worship that connects the servant directly to his Lord. When you give for Allah's sake alone, you free yourself from the chains of people's opinions, their praise, or their ingratitude. Your heart becomes attached to the One who never forgets a single good deed. Imagine the peace that fills a heart that expects nothing from creation but everything from the Creator! This is the path to true contentment and spiritual elevation. Let us strive to purify our intentions, to give secretly and sincerely, and to remember that Allah sees every act of kindness—even a smile, even a small morsel of food—and He never lets it go to waste. The One who feeds you will never abandon you when you feed others for His sake.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Al-Insan

They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
[Saying], "We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.
Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."
So Allah will protect them from the evil of that Day and give them radiance and happiness
