Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • يُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ (They fulfill the vow): They perfectly and completely honor the pledge they made to Allah, whether it was an obligatory act or a voluntary act of obedience they committed themselves to.
  • النَّذْرِ (The vow/pledge): A commitment a person makes upon themselves to perform an act of worship or obedience to Allah.
  • يَخَافُونَ (They fear): They are in a state of reverent awe and caution.
  • يَوْمًا (A Day): The Day of Resurrection.
  • شَرُّهُ (Its evil): Its harm, distress, and punishment.
  • مُسْتَطِيرًا (Widespread/far-reaching): Spreading and extending everywhere, like a fire that spreads and engulfs everything in its path.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

These are the qualities of the righteous servants of Allah — the very ones who will be honored with the pure drink from the spring of Kafur in Paradise. Their defining characteristics are twofold:

First: They fulfill their vows. When they commit themselves to an act of obedience — whether it is a vow they made to Allah or a duty they took upon themselves — they do not break it, delay it, or neglect it. They are people of integrity and steadfastness. Their word is their bond, and their bond with Allah is sacred. This is not merely about formal vows; it reflects a broader character of sincerity and commitment in all their dealings with their Lord.

Second: They fear a Day whose evil is widespread. They live with a profound awareness of the Day of Judgment — a Day whose terror spreads far and wide, engulfing all creation except those whom Allah shields with His mercy. The word "mustatiran" evokes the image of a blazing fire whose flames leap and spread in every direction, or a dust storm that covers the horizon. This is the Day when faces will frown, foreheads will perspire, and hearts will be in turmoil. Because they fear this Day, they prepare for it — through obedience, through sacrifice, and through sincere devotion.

These two qualities are intertwined: their fear of that terrible Day drives them to fulfill their vows and commitments to Allah. They do not merely hope for Paradise; they actively work for it with a heart that is both hopeful and cautious.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on these beautiful qualities. These are not impossible ideals — they are attainable traits that every sincere Muslim can cultivate. When you make a promise to Allah, even a small one, honor it. When you commit to a good deed, complete it. And let the awareness of that awesome Day — a Day whose evil spreads like fire — motivate you, not to despair, but to action. For the very same people who feared that Day are the ones who will be drinking from that delightful spring in Paradise, enjoying what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever imagined.

Islam teaches us that fear of Allah is not a paralyzing terror; it is a loving caution that protects us from harm and guides us to eternal success. Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your commitment to Allah, to fulfill your promises to Him, and to live each day with the awareness that you are preparing for a meeting with your Lord — a meeting that will determine your eternal destiny.

May Allah make us among those who fulfill their vows and who are safe on that Day whose evil is widespread.
